Because the etiology of mucositis is multifactorial , approaches to prevention and management have also been multifactorial. Effective prevention and management of mucositis will reduce the pain and suffering experienced during cancer treatment. Oropharyngeal pain in cancer patients frequently requires systemic analgesics, adjunctive medications, physical therapy, and psychologic therapy in addition to oral care and topical treatments. ⋯ Among other approaches that require further study are low-energy lasers and anti-inflammatory medications. These approaches to management have undergone initial study, but additional investigation is needed to determine their effectiveness with respect to the prevention of mucositis and symptom management and to determine appropriate doses and frequencies of intervention. Current studies and our increasing understanding of the pathogenesis of oral mucositis will lead to new approaches to management and improved quality of life for these patients.

The relationship between chronic facial pain and a history of trauma and surgery.
Because pain is the most commonly reported symptom of patients presenting to temporomandibular disorders clinics, it is important to identify factors that modify the perception or reality of such pain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the hypothesis that a patient with a history of trauma and/or non-temporomandibular joint surgery might be sensitized to pain and might report increased pain levels if a temporomandibular disorder later developed. ⋯ There is a relationship between a patient's reported history of trauma and/or non-temporomandibular joint-related operations and the severity and frequency of facial and temporomandibular joint pain, should it develop. It is possible that such traumas and operations sensitize the patient in such a way that the pain of subsequent temporomandibular joint disorders is heightened.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialThe use of ultrasound for guiding needle placement for inferior alveolar nerve blocks.
The degree of pulpal anesthesia obtained with an ultrasound-assisted inferior alveolar nerve block was compared to that obtained with a conventional inferior alveolar nerve block for mandibular teeth to determine whether needle placement assisted by ultrasound results in more successful anesthesia. ⋯ It was concluded that accurate needle placement with ultrasound for the inferior alveolar nerve block did not result in more successful pulpal anesthesia in the mandible. Therefore, accuracy of needle placement is not the primary reason for pulpal anesthetic failure with this block.

Prevalence of temporomandibular disorders associated with whiplash injury in Lithuania.
The purpose of this study was to ascertain the prevalence of symptoms of temporomandibular disorders in whiplash victims in Lithuania and compare it with the prevalence in otherwise healthy control subjects. ⋯ Unlike whiplash claimants in many Western societies, Lithuanian accident victims do not appear to report the chronic symptoms of temporomandibular disorders despite their acute whiplash injuries.
