Presence of human herpesvirus-like DNA sequence in oral Kaposi's sarcoma. A preliminary PCR study.
DNA sequences closely related to herpesvirus-like sequences have been found in AIDS-associated Kaposi's sarcoma. Subsequent studies indicate that these DNA sequences may be consistently found in AIDS Kaposi's sarcoma and non-AIDS Kaposi's sarcoma from different geographic regions. Oral Kaposi's sarcoma is rare and the specificity of this viral DNA in oral Kaposi's sarcoma and in other oral neoplasms has not been examined. ⋯ All three specimens of oral AIDS-Kaposi's sarcoma from two patients were positive for this DNA sequence. All of the other intraoral lesions including hemangioma, pyogenic granuloma, and various types of epithelial neoplasms, however, had negative reactions. Our results further confirm that oral Kaposi's sarcoma appears to be associated with this herpesvirus-like DNA sequence.

Severe restriction in jaw movement after routine injection of local anesthetic in patients who have fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva.
To determine the relationship of dental procedures to immediate ossification and ankylosis of the jaw in patients who have fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva. ⋯ Injections of local anesthetic during dental procedures pose serious and immediate risk for inciting heterotopic ossification and ankylosis of the jaw in patients who have fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva and should be assiduously avoided.

Case ReportsTrigeminal neuralgia mimicking odontogenic pain. A report of two cases.
Trigeminal neuralgia or tic douloureux is characterized by paroxysmal episodes of facial pain in the distribution of the trigeminal nerve, although patients may have a variety of symptoms that mimic odontogenic pain. This article presents two cases of trigeminal neuralgia that were misdiagnosed and initially treated endodontically as pain of odontogenic origin. A therapeutic regimen of carbamazepine alleviated the pain in both patients. These two cases demonstrate the importance of having a thorough knowledge of both odontogenic and nonodontogenic causes of orofacial pain, as well as the need for careful diagnosis before undertaking any treatment.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialEfficacy of Chinese acupuncture on postoperative oral surgery pain.
One of the challenges of acupuncture research is designing appropriate control groups. To address this problem, after surgical third molar extractions 19 patients were randomly assigned to an acupuncture group (n = 11) or a placebo acupuncture group (n = 8). ⋯ The results indicated that subjects treated with acupuncture reported longer pain-free duration times (mean, 181 versus 71 minutes; p < or = 0.046) and experienced less pain intensity than those who received placebo acupuncture. This study provides a model for an acupuncture control that could examine the placebo effect in clinical acupuncture research.

Case ReportsSarcoid ranula. Its association with wide-spread sarcoidosis.
The presence of noncaseating granulomas in salivary tissue is a specific feature of sarcoidosis. We document the case of a healthy woman who presented with a sarcoid ranula of the sublingual salivary gland without any other manifestations of the disease. This sarcoid ranula subsequently progressed to symptomatic widespread sarcoidosis in a span of 7 months. An asymptomatic sarcoid ranula may thus possibly represent a precursor to widespread sarcoidosis.
