Case ReportsDistraction osteogenesis for reconstruction after mandibular segmental resection.
Distraction osteogenesis with the shortening and lengthening method is a well-established procedure for repairing extremities. We used this technique for reconstruction after mandibular segmental resection. A 74-year-old woman underwent distraction osteogenesis with an intraoral device, initially shortening the mandible after a 20-mm-long segmental resection, followed by lengthening at a rate of 0.8 mm per day for 21 days. ⋯ Radiographic observation showed new bone formation, and the implant was completely osseointegrated. Although the follow-up period is relatively short, the clinical course was uneventful. Distraction osteogenesis with the shortening and lengthening method seems to be a feasible option for reconstruction after segmental resection of the mandible.

The biological concept of "internal derangement and osteoarthrosis": a diagnostic approach in patients with temporomandibular joint pain?
We sought to investigate whether the finding of temporomandibular joint (TMJ)-related pain may be linked to magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings of TMJ internal derangement and TMJ osteoarthrosis. ⋯ The results suggest that TMJ-related pain is correlated with TMJ-related MR imaging diagnoses of internal derangement and osteoarthrosis. The data confirm the biological concept of "internal derangement and osteoarthrosis," yet re-emphasize that internal derangement and osteoarthrosis may not be regarded as the unique and dominant factors in the definition of TMJ pain.

Prevalence of subjective dry mouth and burning mouth in hospitalized elderly patients and outpatients in relation to saliva, medication, and systemic diseases.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of self-reported symptoms of dry mouth and burning mouth in the frail elderly. We expected to find the studied symptoms more frequently in the frail elderly than in those who were healthier. ⋯ The subjective feelings of dry mouth and burning mouth appeared to be a complex issue among the elderly population studied. The 2 symptoms were seldom reported at the same time. The appearance of symptoms did not directly correlate with general health, except in the case of psychiatric diseases and medications, which should be taken into account.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialThe influence of pilocarpine and biperiden on pH value and calcium, phosphate, and bicarbonate concentrations in saliva during and after radiotherapy for head and neck cancer.
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the influence of parasympathomimetic pilocarpine and anticholinergic biperiden on salivation, pH value, and calcium, phosphate, and bicarbonate concentrations in saliva in patients irradiated for malignant tumors of the head and neck region. ⋯ The results of our study indicate that the inhibition of saliva secretion during radiotherapy and its stimulation after completion of treatment can contribute not only to some preservation of the quantity of saliva but also to at least partial preservation of its quality in terms of pH value and calcium, phosphate, and bicarbonate concentrations.
