Many studies have focused on axon regeneration after spinal cord injury (SCI), and fibrinogen has been reported to be an inhibitory factor for axon regeneration. However, most of these studies were based on animal experiments and in vitro trials. Few studies reported serum concentrations of fibrinogen in patients with SCI. ⋯ The serum concentrations of fibrinogen in patients with SCI were significantly increased after injury and were correlated with the severity of neurologic deficit in patients with SCI.

To show that the combined use of intraoperative high-field MRI (iMRI) and electrophysiologic monitoring (IOM) is feasible, safe, and beneficial for patients. ⋯ The combined use of IOM and 1.5T iMRI is feasible and safe. The complementary use of both technologies might result in more radical resections at comparable surgically induced neurologic deficits. If available and indicated, the combined use of IOM and iMRI should be performed on a routine basis.

Lateral lumbar interbody fusion is a minimally invasive approach to anterior spinal column fusion, deformity correction, and indirect decompression of the lumbar spine. A rarely reported possible complication of the procedure is end plate fracture, which has the potential for nerve root compression. Here we present a case of end plate fracture and nerve compression after stand-alone lateral lumbar interbody fusion, its diagnosis, and its subsequent successful treatment with transforaminal endoscopic spine surgery. The case highlights the possible role for minimally invasive endoscopic surgery as a rescue procedure after fusion complication.

Surgery of the craniocervical junction (CCJ) and clivus is technically demanding. For many years, we have used the submandibular retropharyngeal approach for surgery of the upper cervical spine, especially hangman fracture. We hypothesized that submandibular gland resection could offer a significant cranial enlargement of the operative field, up to the clivus. Our aim in this work was to assess the feasibility of an endoscope-assisted retropharyngeal approach to the CCJ and clivus. ⋯ An endoscopic submandibular retropharyngeal approach provides a simple and straightforward access to the CCJ. It also conveniently exposes the clivus. This technique could be added to the techniques used for this difficult surgery.

We sought to simply demonstrate how levels of soluble human epoxide hydrolase-2 show changes in both temporal the cortex and hippocampal complex in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. ⋯ Soluble human epoxy hydrolase enzyme-2 is increased in both lateral and medial temporal tissues in temporal lobe epilepsy. Further studies should be conducted as inhibition of this enzyme has resulted in a significant decrease in or stopping of seizures and attenuated neuroinflammation in experimental epilepsy models in the current literature.
