This study prospectively investigated the relationship between cerebellar retraction factors measured on preoperative magnetic resonance and the development of postoperative hearing loss and evaluated their potential role in predicting the possibility of hearing loss after microvascular decompression (MVD) for hemifacial spasm (HFS). ⋯ The results in this study strongly suggested the correlation between the cerebellar retraction depth and the possibility of hearing loss after MVD for HFS. In addition, cerebellar retraction depth could be considered as a useful tool to predict the risk of post-MVD hearing loss.

Epidemiology and Characteristics of Neurosurgical Conditions at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.
The unmet surgical need, specifically neurosurgical need, in Uganda is significant, yet only 2 public hospitals currently perform neurosurgery in the country. This study examines the epidemiology and outcomes of neurosurgical conditions presenting to 1 of 12 regional referral hospitals in Uganda, in an effort to understand the neurosurgical needs of this population. ⋯ Traumatic brain injury represented the majority of neurosurgical admissions at MRRH, disproportionately affecting young males. Age, closed head injury, admission Glasgow Coma Scale, getting a diagnostic image, and neurosurgical procedure were all independent predictors of mortality. Resource appropriate interventions throughout the health system are needed to meet the demand and improve outcomes.

Associations of endothelin polymorphisms and aneurysm size at the time of rupture.
Aneurysm size is an important risk factor for aneurysm rupture. The pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying aneurysm growth remain poorly understood. Endothelin signaling is critical for cerebrovascular blood flow regulation. The influence of endothelin single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on aneurysm size at the time of rupture has not been previously investigated. ⋯ The EDNRA SNP rs5335 was independently associated with aneurysms ≥7 mm in size at the time of rupture. Patients with cerebral aneurysms also carrying the G allele of EDNRA SNP rs5335 may develop larger aneurysms before rupture.

Management of War-related Ballistic Craniocerebral Injuries in a French Role 3 Hospital During the Afghan Campaign.
France deployed to Afghanistan from 2001 to 2014 within the International Security and Assistance Force. A French role 3 hospital was built in 2009 in the vicinity of Kabul International Airport (KaIA). The objectives of this study were to describe the epidemiology, management, and outcome of war-related craniocerebral injuries during the Afghan campaign in a French role 3 hospital. ⋯ War casualties with ballistic head injuries were predominantly multitraumatized patients with hemodynamic compromise requiring neurosurgical damage control management and multidisciplinary care. The neurosurgeon has thus an essential role to play.

To study factors influencing oro-facial herpetic eruptions (HEs) in patients undergoing retromastoid suboccipital craniectomy for vestibular schwannomas (VS). ⋯ The study highlights the relatively high incidence and factors associated with this rare but benign complication.
