It is not unusual to find neurosurgeons in the news and entertainment. The present study examined the portrayal of neurosurgeons by major print and online media sources. ⋯ Neurosurgeons are naturally subject to media coverage, and we must be cognizant that this predilection can serve as both an occupational advantage and an occupational hazard.

To describe and compare surgical exposure through microsurgical cadaveric dissection of the intercollicular region afforded by the median, paramedian, and extreme-lateral supracerebellar infratentorial (SCIT) approaches. ⋯ All the SCIT approaches warrant a safe route to the quadrigeminal plate. Among the different variants, the median approach had the smallest median surgical area exposure but presented superior results to access the intercollicular safe entry zone.

Spinal metastases (SMs) from kidney and thyroid cancers have several common features suggesting that excisional surgery for isolated and removable SMs can improve survival. We propose a simple treatment algorithm for SMs from these cancers. Our study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the algorithm. ⋯ Our treatment algorithm of SMs from kidney and thyroid cancers is useful for determining an adequate treatment including excisional surgery.

Although reports regarding the relationship between surgical complications and quality of life (QOL) exist, a general consensus regarding this issue is lacking. The aim of this study was to evaluate QOL after endoscopic transsphenoidal approach. ⋯ Endoscopic transsphenoidal approach can improve QOL in patients by 6 months postoperatively. In patients with acromegaly with significant QOL impairments preoperatively, surgery sometimes may be unable to normalize QOL.

Surgery is the first-line therapy for glioblastoma. There is evidence that extent of resection is significantly associated with patient survival. Unfortunately, optimal surgical resection is usually limited because of the difficulty in discriminating tumor-infiltrated region and normal brain tissue. This study aimed to develop a tool to distinguish between infiltration zone and normal tissue in real time during glioma surgery. ⋯ The newly designed in vivo fiber-optic probe can distinguish tumor-infiltration zones from normal brain tissue in this in vivo study. Therefore, it may help neurosurgeons to increase extent of resection without damaging normal brain tissue and thus potentially improve the patients' survival and quality of life.
