Prospective patient-reported outcomes (PROs) registries are central to emerging evidence-driven reform models. These registries entail significant operator and responder burden to capture PROs data. It is important to limit the number of PROs administered. We sought to determine whether the anxiety/depression domain of EQ-5D could be used to define preoperative psychological distress in patients undergoing elective spine surgery. ⋯ The anxiety/depression domain of EQ-5D could be used to categorize preoperative psychological distress. Spine registries could use this information to potentially limit the number of validated PROs administered.

Recently, in modern neurosurgery, a tendency toward low-traumatic surgical approaches has become clear. To provide a minimal degree of injury to the brain tissue, we have offered microsurgical approaches through a burr hole. ⋯ Burr hole microsurgery provides the ability to perform successful surgery on patients with the most diverse intracranial pathological features through a smaller opening than that used for keyhole surgery.

Neurorrhaphy with interpositional graft is a practical technique to achieve facial reanimation when the continuity of the facial nerve is interrupted and a large gap between the proximal and distal stump exists. The aim of this study was to report long-term outcomes of neurorrhaphy for facial reanimation with interpositional graft. The roles of some variable factors in the outcome of neurorrhaphy with interpositional graft were also evaluated and compared. ⋯ Early neurorrhaphy with interpositional graft (≤1 year) for facial reanimation resulted in better final facial nerve function outcomes compared with a delayed procedure.

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) has been a widely accepted procedure for the treatment of cervical disc diseases. However, due to several reports regarding postfusion exacerbation of adjacent segments, a motion-preserving prosthesis was developed. In the present retrospective analysis, total disc replacement (TDR) using ActivC (Aesculap AG, Tuttlingen, Germany) was compared with ACDF using a stand-alone cage. ⋯ In the present study, TDR using ActivC showed successful motion preservation at the operated level and equivalent results were observed with ACDF based on clinical and radiologic results.

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a valuable tool for the characterization of brain tumors in vivo. However, few studies have investigated the correlation between carbon-11-methionine (11C-METH) PET metrics and the clinical, radiological, histological, and molecular features of patients affected by lower grade gliomas (LGGs). The present observational study evaluated the relationships between 11C-METH PET metrics and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings with the histomolecular biomarkers in patients with LGGs who were candidates for surgery. ⋯ The 11C-METH PET metrics correlated significantly with histological grade and the molecular profile. Semiquantitative PET metrics can improve the preoperative evaluation of LGGs and thus support clinical decision-making.
