Temporary placement of an internal distraction rod is one of the surgical options in the treatment of severe scoliosis to avoid preoperative halo traction or vertebral column resection. This technique can be applied in a single session or staged. The aim of our study was to report the outcomes of less-invasive temporary internal distraction (LI-TID) in the surgical treatment of adolescents with severe idiopathic scoliosis (IS). ⋯ The results from the present study have shown that staged LI-TID, followed by pedicle screw instrumentation, is safe and effective in adolescents with severe IS, with improvements in spinal deformity, pulmonary function, and health-related quality of life.

The Outcome of Epidural Hematoma : Lessons from Solitary Fibrous Tumor / Hemangiopericytoma-case report.
Intracranial solitary fibrous tumor (SFT)/hemangiopericytoma (HPC) is rare. In this report, a case of epidural hematoma (EDH) that eventually evolved into SFT/HPC is presented. We describe the possible association between the 2 diseases, which has not been previously reported. ⋯ To our knowledge, this is the first report that HPC occurred in the epidural cavity. We are the first time to describe the possible association between EDH and HPC.

Primary closure of the surgical wound during neurosurgical procedures is sometimes difficult because of limited ability to expand the scalp, or because the skin defect is large. Hence, our institution recently adopted the technique of intraoperative tissue expansion using a Foley catheter for these cases. We describe this easily accomplished, readily available, effective, economical technique and describe our experience performing the technique. ⋯ Intraoperative skin expansion using a Foley catheter-which is easily performed, readily available, and economical-can be used to achieve surgical wound closure during various neurosurgical procedures.

Acute bilateral vocal fold paralysis is a life-threatening complication that can occur during spinal surgery but has almost exclusively occurred with anterior approaches. Bilateral vocal fold paralysis after posterior spinal surgery has been exceedingly rare. ⋯ We suggest that multiple system atrophy can result in an increased risk of bilateral vocal fold paralysis during surgical intervention of dropped head syndrome. Thus, our report could be of interest for those who perform spinal surgery in patients with neurological conditions.

The clinical application of posterior percutaneous endoscopic cervical discectomy (PPECD) achieves stable curative effects and satisfactory results in patients with cervical spondylotic radiculopathy. However, the management of PPECD in the treatment of CSM is rarely discussed. ⋯ This technique of modified PPECD with anterior bony decompression has the advantages of reduced trauma and shorter operative time, and it is very effective in the treatment of degenerative CSM caused by vertebral posterior osteophytosis. No surgery-related complications were noted.
