Children make up a significant cohort of patients treated at combat support hospitals. Where traumatic head injury, including intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), is well studied in military adults, such research is lacking regarding pediatric patients. We seek to describe the incidence and outcomes of ICH within this population. ⋯ Within our dataset, we identified 495 cases of ICH in pediatric patients. Most survived to hospital discharge despite less than half undergoing a decompression procedure.

Microelectrode recording (MER)-guided deep brain stimulation (DBS) remains the standard electrophysiological procedure to place the DBS lead at the optimal target. When single-track MER or test stimulation yields suboptimal results, trajectory adjustments are needed. Intraoperative computed tomography (iCT) can be useful to visualize the microelectrode and verify possible adjustments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of iCT in MER during frameless stereotactic DBS for Parkinson disease (PD). ⋯ iCT can reduce the number of MER tracks and increase surgical accuracy. Further studies are warranted to investigate whether iCT can reduce surgical complications and improve surgical outcomes.

Spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage is often due to rupture of an intracranial aneurysm, but some patients present with no identifiable source. Increased incidence of nonaneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (naSAH) has been reported over time. ⋯ As cannabis use becomes more prevalent with legalization, it is important to further investigate this association with spontaneous SAH.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a surge in the use of telehealth visits across the country to minimize in-person visits and to limit the spread of COVID-19. To date, no standards or outlines for telehealth spine examinations have been detailed and many surgeons simply defer the physical examination when performing telehealth visits. Nevertheless, just as physical examination of the spine is an integral part of live clinical encounters, appropriately modified physical examinations should also be part of virtual visits. ⋯ An effective and efficient spine physical examination can be performed during telehealth visits. Future directions include verifying the findings from our virtual physical examination with in-person examinations.

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a safe and effective procedure but has approach-related complications like postoperative dysphagia and dysphonia (PDD). Patient-reported outcome measures including the Hospital for Special Surgery Dysphagia and Dysphonia Inventory (HSS-DDI) have been used for the assessment of PDD. Various factors have been described that affect ACDF outcomes, and our aim was to investigate the effect of workers' compensation (WC) status. ⋯ WC status was associated with a worse HSS-DDI score but could not be shown to be an independent risk factor for PDD. The preoperative NDI score was a strong predictor for PDD with a clinically relevant difference in the HSS DDI score (P < 0.0001). Surgeon awareness of risk factors for PDD such as WC status, even if it could not be shown as independent, is important as it may influence surgical decision making and managing patient expectations.
