Venous thromboembolism (VTE), including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), and intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) may complicate the post-operative course of patients undergoing craniotomy. While prophylaxis with unfractionated heparin (UFH) has been shown to reduce VTE rates, twice-daily (BID) and three-times-daily (TID) UFH dosing regimens have not been compared in neurosurgical procedures. The objective of this study was to explore the association between UFH dosing regimen and rates of VTE and ICH in craniotomy patients. ⋯ UFH TID dosing is associated with lower rates of PE when compared with BID dosing in patients undergoing craniotomy.

Citation rates are an important measure for the impact of articles. This study is the most comprehensive analysis of predictors for scientific neurosurgical research articles. ⋯ In the most thorough analysis of citation predictors in the neurosurgical literature, search engine, LOE, number of centers, number of authors, number of countries, journal impact factor, and month of publication influenced citations 5 years after publication.

To investigate the effect of surgical stabilization for patients with metastatic spinal disease on objective mobility metrics. ⋯ Surgical stabilization for patients with mechanical back pain secondary to metastatic spinal disease might lead to an objective improvement in JH-HLM score. JH-HLM and AM-PAC scores may be correlated with length of hospital stay and discharge disposition. Future studies are encouraged to further characterize the role of these mobility metrics in the management plan of these patients.

Cavernous venous malformations (CVMs) represent the most common benign intraorbital lesions. Enlarging or symptomatic CVMs (progressive proptosis or visual disturbances) are treated by surgical resection. For this, a variety of different surgical approaches have been described. The aim of this study was to present a contemporary series of orbital CVMs treated via open microsurgical approaches. ⋯ Resection of orbital CVMs is indicated in patients with visual disturbances or progressive proptosis. In these, microsurgical approaches can be used with minimal morbidity for complete removal of these well-circumscribed lesions.
