Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most frequently diagnosed malignant brain tumor in adults. GBM is usually lethal within 24 months of diagnosis, despite aggressive multimodality treatment. Although it has been established that cancer-related inflammation is associated with worse outcomes, the role of eosinophils, basophils, atopy, and allergy in glioma biology is only gradually being delineated. In this study, we aimed to examine if eosinophil-based and basophil-based indices were altered in patients with GBM compared with healthy controls. We also aimed to study if there was any correlation between these indices and patient-related and tumor-related factors and survival. ⋯ The absolute eosinophil count was consistently higher in the better prognosis groups and is likely to be incorporated into prognostic models for GBM.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of a Hospital Frailty Risk Score (HFRS) on unplanned readmission and health care resource utilization in normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) patients undergoing a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt surgery. ⋯ Our study suggests that frailty, as defined by HFRS, is associated with increased resource utilization in NPH patients undergoing VP shunt surgery. Furthermore, HFRS was an independent predictor of adverse events and 30-day hospital readmission.

Nontraumatic perilesional aneurysms are thought to occur because of high-flow demands of feeding arteries and neoangiogenesis of hypervascular lesions, most commonly in vascular malformations, but they can rarely be associated with tumors as well. Most of these perilesional aneurysms are from intracranial vasculature associated with branches off the internal carotid artery. We report the unique case of a middle meningeal artery aneurysm associated with a giant convexity meningioma seen on a preoperative angiogram.

A new formula containing terms for age and sagittal curvature reported by the International Spine Study Group is ideal lumbar lordosis (iLL) = pelvic incidence - 0.3 thoracic kyphosis - 0.5Age + 10. However, there are no reports of whether proximal junctional failure (PJF) can be predicted using this formula. We assessed the utility of this formula in PJF in patients with adult spinal deformity with global kyphosis using the Roussouly classification. ⋯ The results of ΔiLL suggest that overcorrection needs to be addressed but that this new formula, including age adjustment, may not predict PJF.
