This study aims to evaluate the rate of improvement in neurologic recovery of patients with sports-related spinal cord injury (SRSCI) who had surgical intervention (SS) and those who did not (NSS). We aimed to 1) evaluate the rate of American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) conversion in patients with and without surgery, and 2) assess predictors of conversion in ASIA grade. ⋯ We found that patients undergoing SS had longer LOS and a higher prevalence of complete injuries. Surgical intervention was not associated with conversion in ASIA grade to an improved status at time of discharge in a large cohort of patients with SRSCI and in a subcohort of patients with cervical SRSCI.

Influence of bilateral cerebellar infarction on functional outcome after endovascular treatment for basilar artery occlusion.
To measure the magnitude of the effect of the infarct location measured using the posterior circulation Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomographic Score (pc-ASPECTS) on the functional outcome at 90 days in patients with basilar artery (BA) occlusion undergoing endovascular therapy (EVT). ⋯ A higher pc-ASPECTS before EVT could be a predictor of a favorable outcome after EVT for BA occlusion. In particular, the presence of bilateral cerebellar infarction before EVT was significantly associated with a lower likelihood of a favorable outcome.

In this study, we aimed to analyze the risk factors of bone cement leakage in percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs), and provide suggestions for reducing bone cement leakage. ⋯ Impairment of BMD value, defects of cortical bone, and inappropriate stage of bone cement injection will increase the risk of bone cement leakage in PKP treatment and limit PKP effects.

Some aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) patients are delayed in their presentation. This can cause a washout of the subarachnoid hematoma and a potential misdiagnosis. As a result, they may suffer rerupture of the aneurysm and preventable deterioration. We investigated the factors that influence delayed SAH presentation. ⋯ Area of residency and gender correlated with delayed presentation after SAH in Japan. Urbanization, male gender, and mild SAH lead patients to delay presentation. The factors underlying these tendencies will be analyzed in a future prospective study.

The objective of this study was to summarize and assess the current literature evaluating nonoperative treatments for patients with Modic changes (MCs) and low back pain (LBP). ⋯ Nonoperative therapy may provide patients with MC with significant benefits. Patients may benefit from therapies not traditionally utilized for LBP such as antibiotics or bisphosphonates, but conservative therapy is not recommended for patients with concomitant MC and disc herniation. The large variation in follow-up times and outcome measures contributes to significant heterogeneity in studies and inability to predict long-term patient outcomes. More long-term studies are needed to assess nonoperative treatments for LBP in patients with MC.
