In the present study, we evaluate the characteristics of cognitive and affective function in patients with somatotroph adenomas (SAs) that secrete excess growth hormone and the effects of surgical intervention. ⋯ Patients with SAs showed specific cognitive deficits and abnormal moods, which might be attributed to the overproduction of growth hormone. However, surgical intervention had a limited effect on improving the impaired cognitive function and abnormal moods in patients with SAs at short-term follow-up.

Application of surgical skull pins causes hemodynamic fluctuations in neurosurgical procedures. To reduce this response, we describe the use of a novel nonpharmacologic method in the form of medical-grade sterile silicone studs to cushion the pressure of the skull pin in the adult population. This study aimed to evaluate the use of conventionally used fentanyl and medical-grade sterile silicone studs for the prevention of hemodynamic response to skull pin insertion. ⋯ The use of medical-grade silicone studs causes fewer hemodynamic fluctuations compared with fentanyl on skull pinning. Further studies with larger sample sizes are required to confirm the findings of this pilot study.

This study aimed to evaluate the utility of computed tomography (CT)-based Hounsfield units (HUs) and magnetic resonance imaging-based Vertebral Bone Quality (VBQ) scores as alternatives to dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry for predicting the risk of proximal junctional failure (PJF) in female patients with adult spinal deformity (ASD) undergoing 2-stage corrective surgery with lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF). ⋯ The findings suggest that measuring HU values at UIV or L4 by CT may be useful for predicting the risk of PJF in female ASD patients undergoing 2-stage corrective surgery with LLIF. Therefore, CT-based HUs should be considered in ASD surgery planning to reduce the risk of PJF.

The purpose of our study was to analyze the impact of time interval from referral to surgery and from surgery to adjuvant treatment on survival of adult isocitrate dehydrogenase-wild-type (IDH-wt) glioblastomas. ⋯ Interval from referral to surgery in the range of 4-10 weeks was not associated with decreased survivals in IDH-wt glioblastomas. In contrast, delay exceeding 30 days from surgery to adjuvant treatment may decrease long-term survival.
