To identify the morphological characteristics together with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) hydrodynamics on preoperative magnetic resonance imaging that improve the prediction of foramen magnum decompression (FMD) treatment outcome for Chiari malformations type I (CM-I) patients compared with the CSF hydrodynamics-based model. ⋯ Combined CSF hydrodynamic and static morphologic MR measurements can better predict the response to FMD. A higher peak diastolic velocity of the aqueduct midportion and broader fourth ventricle outlet were associated with satisfying outcomes after decompression in CM-I patients.

Here, we aimed to investigate the clinical parameters affecting the recurrence of meningiomas, and to construct a predictive nomogram model, so as to predict the recurrence-free survival (RFS) of meningiomas more accurately. ⋯ The tumor size, Ki-67 index, and extent of resection were independent factors affecting the RFS of meningioma. The predictive nomogram based on these factors can be used as an effective method to stratify the recurrence risk of meningioma and provide a reference for patients to choose personalized treatment.

Recent advances in intraoperative neuronavigation and cranial access devices have facilitated an increasing interest in the use of minimally invasive techniques (minimally invasive surgery) to safely treat subcortical lesions via a parafascicular approach. Newly developed expandable retractors, such as the MindsEye system further optimize such approaches. In this technical report, we describe the nuances in minimally invasive surgery parenchymal hematoma evacuation using the MindsEye device. ⋯ Minimally invasive catheter-based and parafascicular approaches using tubular retractors are increasingly recognized as a viable option in the treatment of subcortical lesions. The MindsEye is the first expandable brain access port designed for removal of deep intracranial lesions. We believe it represents a recent addition in the armament of cranial surgeons.

The spine is one of the common sites of esophageal cancer metastasis, with a worse prognosis than that of metastasis occurring in other sites. However, the exact mechanism underlying metastatic spinal esophageal cancer (MSEC) is poorly understood possibly due to the short survival time of patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate surgical outcomes and factors affecting the prognosis of patients with MSEC. ⋯ Timely surgical intervention can improve the quality of life of patients with MSEC. The preoperative erythrocyte sedimentation rate, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, and platelet/lymphocyte ratio could help predict the overall survival of patients with MSEC. These findings may help in decision-making for the treatment of patients with MSEC.

Lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LSS) with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) can require revision surgery because of the intervertebral instability after decompression. However, there is a lack of mechanical analyses for decompression procedures for LSS with DISH. ⋯ The concentration of stress because of DISH may influence adjacent segment disease on the nonunited segment of PLIF. A shorter-level lumbar interbody fixation is recommended to preserve ROM; however, it should be used with caution because it could provoke adjacent segment disease.
