Lumbar interbody fusion (LIF) is a common surgical procedure, but postoperative complications, such as osteolytic vertebral endplate cysts, can adversely affect patient outcomes. This study aims to investigate whether tritanium cages (Stryker, Mahwah, New Jersey, USA) are effective in preventing osteolytic vertebral endplate cysts after LIF. ⋯ Tritanium cages have shown promise in preventing postoperative osteolytic vertebral endplate cysts, suggesting their potential as a stable and effective choice in LIF procedures. These findings have significant implications for improving patient outcomes and warrant further investigation to optimize surgical techniques and materials.

People with cognitive impairment often face quality-of-life problems and require ongoing support, which has profound consequences for caregivers and society. Noninvasive brain stimulation techniques, such as median nerve electrical stimulation (MNS), have shown promising potentials in improving cognitive ability in patients with cognitive impairment. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the positive effect and safety of MNS in cognitive impairment. ⋯ These preliminary data provide early evidence that MNS may be a positive effect and safe method for promoting the recovery of cognitive ability in patients with cognitive impairment.

The National Epilepsy Center (NEC) in Sri Lanka was established in 2017. Seizure outcome, effects on quality of life (QOL) and surgical complications among nonpediatric patients who underwent epilepsy surgery from October 2017 to February 2023 are described. ⋯ Epilepsy surgery is effective in developing countries. Seizure outcomes in our patients are comparable to those worldwide. Clinically important QOL improvement was observed in our series. This is the first published data on epilepsy surgery outcomes in nonpediatric patients from Sri Lanka.

The study aims to investigate whether intraoperative protection of the pharyngeal autonomic nerve can effectively reduce the incidence of postoperative dysphagia following anterior cervical decompression and fusion surgery (ACDF). ⋯ The adoption of pharyngeal autonomic nerve protective measures during ACDF can effectively lower the probability of postoperative dysphagia.

There is a rising prevalence of overweight and obese persons in the US, and there is a paucity of information about the relationship between frailty and body mass index. Therefore, we examined discrimination thresholds and independent relationships of the risk analysis index (RAI), modified frailty index-5 (mFI-5), and increasing patient age in predicting 30-day postoperative mortality. ⋯ Increasing frailty was associated with a higher rate of 30-day postoperative mortality, with a dose-dependent effect. Furthermore, the RAI had a higher threshold for discrimination and larger effect sizes than mFI-5 and increasing patient age. These findings support RAI's use in preoperative assessments, as it has the potential to improve postoperative outcomes through targeted interventions.
