Although women have made remarkable strides in several medical specialties in Sub-Saharan Africa, their presence and contribution to the development of neurosurgery remain limited. We sought to study the gender differences within Nigerian neurosurgery, identify challenges resulting from these differences, and recommend how African female neurosurgeons can maximize their effects in neurosurgery. ⋯ There is a deficit of both female consultants and trainees among Nigerian neurosurgeons. Identifying female medical students with a strong interest in neurosurgery and providing early mentorship might increase the number of female neurosurgeons.

The aim of this study is to gauge the current social climate in neurosurgical residency training and attitudes regarding sexual orientation and gender identity. ⋯ This is the first study to our knowledge that has been conducted assessing the presence, perception, and treatment of LGBTQ+ trainees in neurosurgical residency. Our study outlines the challenges LGBTQ+ individuals face when applying to neurosurgical programs, which involves the perception of their sexual orientation, their witnessed instances of homophobic and transphobic comments by coworkers and patients, and their hesitation with discussing their social lives compared with their non-LGBTQ+ peers at work for fear of judgment or reprisal. Ongoing research is needed to address these issues to obtain workplace respect and fairness in this population and thus create an accepting atmosphere and achieve social justice in neurosurgery training.

Cervical spine procedures represent a major proportion of all spine surgery. Mitigating the revision rate following cervical procedures requires careful patient selection. While complication risk has successfully been predicted, revision risk has proven more challenging. This is likely due to the absence of granular variables in claims databases. The objective of this study was to develop a state-of-the-art model of revision prediction of cervical spine surgery using laboratory and operative variables. ⋯ Our deep learning approach successfully predicted 3-month revision outcomes from demographic variables, standard laboratory values, and operative variables in a cervical spine surgery cohort. This work used standard laboratory values and operative codes as meaningful predictive variables for revision outcome prediction. The increased performance on certain procedures evidences the need for careful development and validation of one-size-fits-all risk scores for spine procedures.

Intramedullary schwannoma is a relatively rare tumor with only a few literature reports. This study was aimed to report the clinical characteristics of intramedullary schwannoma and discuss imaging findings and treatment strategies. ⋯ This article presented a series of 11 cases of intramedullary schwannoma with sharp margins and well-enhanced features. Prognosis and functional recovery were good after gross total resection.

Like many low- and-middle-income countries in Africa, documented assessment of the neurosurgical workforce, equipment, infrastructure, and scope of service delivery in Nigeria is lacking. This study aimed to assess the capacity for the delivery of neurosurgical services in Nigeria. ⋯ The availability of workforce, infrastructure, equipment, and supplies needed to provide optimal neurosurgical care is uneven in many institutions in Nigeria. Although major strides have been made in recent years, targeted collaborative interventions at local, national, regional, and international levels will further improve neurosurgical service delivery in Nigeria and will have positive ripple effects on the rest of the healthcare system.
