Hip-spine syndrome (HSS) was first described in 1983 to describe the symptomatology resulting from concomitant lumbar degenerative stenosis and hip osteoarthritis. Numerous studies have sought to understand the underlying pathology and appropriate management of this syndrome. The purpose of this article is to review the literature for the specific imaging characteristics and the optimal surgical treatment of HSS. ⋯ The data on the surgical management of HSS remains sparse. While there is some evidence that total hip arthroplasty in patients who previously underwent spinal fusion may have higher complication rates, there remains debate regarding which surgical problem to address first, the hip or the spine.

Nigeria's neurosurgical field faces profound challenges, including a critically low neurosurgeon-to-patient ratio and significant migration of medical professionals to developed countries. High costs, low socioeconomic status, and the urban-centric location of neurosurgical centers impede access to care. Key barriers to service delivery include lack of manpower, insufficient emergency care, limited imaging modalities, inadequate operative equipment, and ineffective political and administrative policies. ⋯ Other approaches include expanding training capacity, particularly in rural areas, implementing a uniform match system for residency, addressing gender disparities, and utilizing dual practice to ensure adequate compensation for neurosurgeons. Furthermore, stakeholders should develop subspecialization programs in areas such as neurovascular, neuro-oncology, pediatric neurosurgery, and minimally invasive neurosurgery to expand service scope. To transform the neurosurgical research landscape, efforts should be made to establish electronic medical databases, foster international collaborations to ensure funding, and make research mandatory for accreditation renewal to ensure continuous academic contribution.

Making neurosurgical care accessible to a larger portion of the population in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is integral due to the high mortality and morbidity associated with brain tumors. However, the high cost of care often makes it financially out of reach for many individuals. Therefore, this review aims to identify barriers to neurosurgical care of brain tumors in terms of financing in LMICs. ⋯ This study explored barriers and challenges to financing neurosurgical care of brain tumors in LMICs. Government support and transparency in healthcare financing should be prioritized to ensure that all individuals have access to surgical care of brain tumors.

Low-income countries (LICs) and lower-middle-income countries (LMICs) are presented with unique challenges and opportunities when performing awake craniotomy (AC) for brain tumors. These circumstances arise from factors that are financial, infrastructural, educational, personnel, and sociocultural in nature. ⋯ There are numerous challenges and opportunities that arise when performing AC in LICs/LMICs. A collaborative approach toward harnessing the opportunities, and seeking creative solutions to address the challenges, would provide an ideal mechanism toward advancing neurosurgical care and specialty worldwide.

Ventriculostomy, one of the most common neurosurgical procedures, involves inserting a draining catheter into the brain's ventricular system to alleviate excessive cerebrospinal fluid accumulation. Traditionally, this procedure has relied on freehand techniques guided by anatomical landmarks, which have shown a high rate of misplacement. Recent advancements in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies have opened up new possibilities in the field. This comprehensive review aims to analyze the existing literature, examine the diverse applications of VR and AR in ventriculostomy procedures, address their limitations, and propose potential future directions. ⋯ The review delves into the fundamental challenges encountered in the implementation of VR and AR systems in ventriculostomy. Additionally, potential future directions and areas for improvement are proposed, addressing the identified limitations and paving the way for further advancements in the field.
