Neurosurgeons demonstrate some of the highest levels of burnout among surgeons, yet little research has been done to understand the underlying stressors that neurosurgeons and trainees experience and the emotional responses to them. Our goal was to conduct a feasibility study identifying job stressors and emotional responses among neurosurgeons rather than generalize findings across the profession. ⋯ The results of our study provide an understanding of neurosurgical professionals' unique emotional landscape, emphasizing the need for reforms in administrative practices, enhanced, healthy coping strategies, and career stage-specific mental health support.

Microanastomosis presents a challenge in neurosurgical procedures, requiring specialized skills. Regular practice outside the operating room is crucial. This study aims to provide a detailed description of the side-to-side anastomosis technique and analyze its advantages in preventing failures compared with other variations. ⋯ This paper presents the first comprehensive description of the side-to-side anastomosis technique, supported with images and videos for training and replicability. Our technique enhances flow dynamics and reduces the risk of acute thrombus formation. Training in simulators and microsurgery practice centers outside the operating room is essential for acquiring and refining microsurgical skills.

Anterior petrosectomy (AP) is a commonly recognized approach for accessing tumors located in the petrous apex region. The essence of AP lies in drilling the petrous part of the temporal bone within the Kawase quadrangle. In our study, we conducted radiological and anatomical analyses of the structures within the petrous portion of the temporal bone, evaluating their impact on the surgical field during AP. ⋯ Our results indicate that preoperative assessment of anatomical conditions based on 3D reconstructions of computed tomography of the middle ear can be a valuable tool in preoperative planning of surgery on tumors in the petroclival region using the AP. Further studies involving a larger sample size are necessary to validate the findings of our study.

By maximizing the advantages of exoscopy, we developed a keyhole approach for intracranial hematoma removal. Herein, we validated the utility of this procedure, and compared it with conventional microscopic hematoma removal and endoscopic hematoma removal in our institution. ⋯ This procedure may be simpler and faster than conventional microscopic hematoma removal, and comparable to endoscopic hematoma removal.

Neurosurgery is one of the most competitive specialties, and navigating the match process is often challenging for aspiring applicants. Here, we analyze insights from the National Resident Matching Program Director Surveys, illustrating evolving trends in applicant selection for interviews and for the ranking process, and providing a comparison with other specialties. ⋯ Our analysis revealed the pervasive importance of specialized endorsements and academic achievements when screening applicants for the interview process. A shift in emphasis toward the USMLE Step 2 became apparent. Personal characteristics, on the other hand, seemed crucial to make a match and rank high among the pool of interviewed applicants. We uncovered difficulties in assessing these characteristics through virtual interviews.
