Review Case Reports
Desmoplastic small round cell tumor of the parotid gland-report of a rare case and a review of the literature.
Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare soft tissue tumor that generally involves the retroperitoneum, pelvis, omentum and mesentery in younger patients. However, extra-abdominal DSRCT is very rare. ⋯ Although DSRCT in the salivary gland is extremely rare, it should be included in the differential diagnosis of poorly differentiated salivary gland neoplasms, especially with a fibromyxoid background. Pathologists should bear in mind that DSRCT may occur in major salivary glands and should perform immunohistochemistry with appropriate antibodies, not only those against keratin and desmin, but also one detecting the C-terminal region of WT-1. Furthermore, molecular detection of EWSR1-WT1 fusion gene conclusively confirmed the diagnosis of DSRCT in this uncommon location.

One of the major challenges remaining in the classification of thyroid tumor is the determination of whether a nodule is benign or malignant. We aimed to characterize the mutational profiles of follicular thyroid tumor and to identify markers with potential diagnostic and prognostic implications. ⋯ TERTp, EIF1AX, TSHR, H/N/K-RAS and TP53 mutations may have diagnostic or prognostic potential in follicular thyroid tumors. TERTp mutations may predict a poor outcome in patients with minimally invasive/encapsulated angioinvasive FTC.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Helicobacter pylori (HP) plays an important role in gastric cancer occurrence and development. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and myeloid differential protein-2 (MD-2) are also reported to be involved in gastric cancer cell proliferation and invasion. CXC chemokine receptor 7 (CXCR7), a second receptor for CXCL12, has been detected in multiple types of tumor tissues. Nevertheless, the biological function and regulation of CXCR7 and its relationship with TLR4 and MD-2 in gastric cancer are not completely understood and therefore warrant further study. ⋯ The results of this study indicate that CXCR7 plays an important role in gastric cancer progression via inflammatory mechanisms, suggesting that CXCR7 could provide a basis for the development and clinical application of a targeted drug for gastric cancer.

Consistency of tumor and immune cell programmed cell death ligand-1 expression within and between tumor blocks using the VENTANA SP263 assay.
Several anti-programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) and anti-programmed cell death ligand-1 (PD-L1) therapies have shown encouraging safety and clinical activity in a variety of tumor types. A potential role for PD-L1 testing in identifying patients that are more likely to respond to treatment is emerging. PD-L1 expression in clinical practice is determined by testing one tumor section per patient. Therefore, it is critical to understand the impact of tissue sampling variability on patients' PD-L1 classification. ⋯ These results show the reproducibility of TC PD-L1 classification across the depth of the tumor using the VENTANA PD-L1 (SP263) assay. Practically, this means that treatment decisions based on TC PD-L1 classification can be made confidently, following analysis of one tumor section. Although more variable than TC staining, consistent IC PD-L1 classification was also observed within and between blocks and across cut-offs.

Ovarian serous borderline tumor/atypical proliferative serous tumor (SBT/APST) is characterized by presenting at an early stage and much longer survival than high-grade serous carcinoma. Given that the prognosis of ovarian SBT/APST with no invasive features is excellent, remote relapse after surgery can pose a diagnostic pitfall. Bone metastasis as transformed low-grade carcinoma is an extremely rare initial presentation of recurrence in patients whose primary tumor was confined to the ovaries. ⋯ Pathologists and radiologists should not exclude late recurrence of ovarian SBT/APST when bone metastases are suspected, even when neither peritoneal nor lymph node involvement are detected. Long-term surveillance of women with ovarian serous tumors with no invasive features is recommended.
