The aims of the study were to identify factors that may result in difficulties in intubation, and to compare the results obtained when an experienced and when a less experienced anaesthesiologist was involved. The 96 patients included in the study were evaluated for difficult intubation according to the following scales: Mallampati, upper lip bite test (ULBT) and Patil. The mobility of the cervical segments of the vertebral column, the distance between the jugular notch of the sternum and the chin and the anatomical constitution of the body were other factors that were taken into consideration. Statistical analysis was performed in order to identify factors that may result in difficulties in intubation for an experienced and for a less experienced anaesthesiologist.

Terminologia anatomica in the past and the future from perspective of 110th anniversary of Polish Anatomical Terminology.
Professional terminology is commonplace, particularly in the fields of mathematics, medicine, veterinary and natural sciences. The use of the terminology can be international, as it is with Anatomical Terminology (AT). In the early age of modern education, anatomists adopted Latin as the international language for AT. ⋯ It is important to note, that even with such difficult circumstances, the PAT was the first national AT in the world. The PAT was a union of the accepted first BNA in Latin and the original Polish anatomical equivalents. This union formed the basis for theoretical and clinical medicine in Poland.

An accessory middle scalene muscle causing thoracic outlet syndrome.
The aim of our study is to present a very rare accessory middle scalene muscle, leading to thoracic outlet syndrome. In particular, a muscular bundle was discovered on a male cadaver connecting the middle portion of the middle scalene muscle with the anterior scalene muscle insertion to Lisfranc's tubercle. ⋯ This anomaly is of great importance because it emphasises the fact that it is not primarily the anterior scalene muscle that produces symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome but the anterior displacement of the middle scalene muscle or its accessory muscular bands. We also present the relative international literature and the clinical significance of our finding.

An unreported variation of the cervical vagus nerve: anatomical and histological observations.
Variations involving the cervical portion of the vagus nerve are seemingly very rare. We report an adult male found to harbour a right cervical vagus nerve that crossed anterior to the right common carotid artery to terminate in the lateral aspect of the thyroid gland. A very small continuation of this nerve was found to continue distally into the thorax. ⋯ We hypothesise that this variation is due to entanglement between the thyroid gland and cervical vagus nerve during development. This rare variation might be considered by the clinician who operates in the cervical region or interprets imaging of the neck. To our knowledge, a vagus nerve with the above described morphology has not been described.

There have been studies concerning the protection of the facial nerve during plastic surgery intended for the parotid gland. The close relationship between the parotid duct and the buccal and zygomatic branches of the facial nerve is studied here. The dissections were performed on 10 fixed cadavers at the Anatomy Dissection Laboratory of Ankara University in 2004. ⋯ Among these one of the most precise measurements was the distance between the lateral canthus and the intersection point of the zygomatic branch and the duct with a coefficient of variation of 9.9%. With the use of this reliable measurement the intersection point of the zygomatic branch and the duct may be estimated to be within 5.16+/-1.01 centimetres of the lateral canthus. Facial nerve paralysis is the most important complication of superficial face surgery and the anatomy of this region must thus be taken into detailed consideration by surgeons.
