Symptoms and signs of temporomandibular disorders in individuals with chronic whiplash-associated disorders.
The purpose of this study was to compare the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) between individuals with chronic whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) and a group of age- and sex-stratified patients attending a Public Dental Service (PDS) clinic. Fifty-four individuals diagnosed with chronic WAD that were referred to a rehabilitation centre constituted the WAD group. The control group consisted of 66 patients at a PDS clinic (C group). ⋯ Pain on mandibular mobility was reported by 30% in the WAD group and by 3% in the C group (p < 0.001). In conclusion, the prevalence of TMD was higher among individuals with chronic WAD compared with an age- and sex-stratified cohort of patients in a general dental practice. The results indicate that trauma to the neck also affects temporomandibular function.

Changes in tobacco habits. A prospective longitudinal study of tobacco habits among boys who play ice hockey.
The aim of the investigation was to follow up tobacco habits and actual sporting activities among the boys who participated in an earlier study by the authors, and to examine whether knowledge of the harmful effects of tobacco and tobacco behaviour patterns and/or the choice of tobacco had changed amongst the participants. The study was conducted 3 years after the original study. Data were collected using a questionnaire. ⋯ The increase in tobacco use amongst the boys in the study showed that the various preventive initiatives which society so far has offered have been inadequate. Hence, the preventive measures need to be evaluated and developed to prevent tobacco habits from becoming established. The results of this and previous studies show that the environment in which ice hockey is practiced can, in itself, constitute a risk for tobacco usage becoming established among ice-hockey-playing adolescents.

A referral letter is an important carrier of information, and it is important that it contains what both the recipient and the referrers expect. Based on the concept of perceived quality of service, 126 consecutive referrals from the General Dental Service (GDS) and their associated replies from the Department of Oral Radiology (OR) were mutually evaluated. OR judged that necessary information about the patient was specified in over 80% of the cases, and that information pertinent to the issue and the proposed examination was included in over 90% of the cases. ⋯ Only 1% reported that the information contained in the reply was not satisfactory for the continued care of the patient. Ninety-one per cent reported that they felt the reply to their referral was adequately long. A mutual questionnaire is a practicable tool to ensure quality in the referral process.

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of rectal midazolam on uncooperative children. The trial included 120 children at the age of 16 months to 10 years and six months (X = 4.5 years). The children were referred because behavioural management techniques alone had failed. ⋯ After two hours 86 children were still considered sedated but after three hours only four of them seemed effected by the drug. Midazolam has shown in this follow-up to be an effective and safe drug for premedication of infants in the stressed dental situation. The advantage to for example diazepam lies mainly in the shorter period of time of sedation.

Temporomandibular disorders in children and adolescents: a survey of dentists' attitudes, routine and experience.
The aim of this study was to survey the experience and routine of, attitudes toward, and need for specialist resources in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in children and adolescents among public dentists. A questionnaire study was conducted in three counties in Sweden: Ostergötland, Västmanland, and Göteborg. The questionnaire was sent to 286 Public Dental Service dentists. ⋯ Good routines were reported only in occlusal splint therapy. The majority of the dentists had a positive attitude toward the care of children and adolescents with TMD-related symptoms. The majority of the dentists reported a great need for TMD specialists.he
