Coronary microvascular function is independently associated with left ventricular filling pressure in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction is known as an early marker of myocardial alterations in patients with diabetes. Because microvascular disease has been regarded as an important cause of heart failure or diastolic dysfunction in diabetic patients, we tested the hypothesis that coronary flow reserve (CFR), which reflects coronary microvascular function, is associated with LV diastolic dysfunction in patients with type 2 diabetes. ⋯ CFR was associated with LV filling pressure in patients with type 2 diabetes. This result suggests a possible link between coronary microvascular disease and LV diastolic function in these subjects.

Platelet hyperactivity and fibrin clot structure in transient ischemic attack individuals in the presence of metabolic syndrome: a microscopy and thromboelastography study.
Strokes are commonly preceded by transient ischemic attacks (TIAs). TIA is often associated with metabolic syndrome (causing chronic inflammation), resulting in a proinflammatory- and procoagulant-environment. The aim of this study was to determine whether platelet- and fibrin network-morphology or coagulation profiles of individuals that suffered a TIA in the presence of metabolic syndrome was altered when compared to healthy individuals. ⋯ The findings indicate that pathological clot formation is not caused by alterations in the coagulation cascade but rather by the premature activation of platelets (as a result of chronic inflammation) that in turn causes altered fibrin formation.

Meta AnalysisCardiovascular safety of linagliptin in type 2 diabetes: a comprehensive patient-level pooled analysis of prospectively adjudicated cardiovascular events.
The cardiovascular (CV) safety of linagliptin was evaluated in subjects with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). ⋯ Linagliptin is not associated with increased CV risk versus pooled active comparators or placebo in patients with T2DM.

Polymorphisms of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (rs1801282) and its coactivator-1 (rs8192673) are associated with obesity indexes in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
The aim of this study was to clarify whether common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor-γ (PPAR-γ) gene (rs1801282) and the Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor-γ Coactivator-1 (PGC-1α) gene (rs8192673) are associated with obesity indexes (BMI, waist circumference) in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Caucasian population. The second aim was to find an association of both polymorphisms with T2DM. ⋯ In a large sample of the Caucasians the rs8192673 of the PGC-1α gene and the rs1801282 of the PPAR-γ gene were associated with waist circumference in subjects with T2DM.

Multicenter StudyCardio-ankle vascular index is associated with cardiovascular target organ damage and vascular structure and function in patients with diabetes or metabolic syndrome, LOD-DIABETES study: a case series report.
The cardio ankle vascular index (CAVI) is a new index of the overall stiffness of the artery from the origin of the aorta to the ankle. This index can estimate the risk of atherosclerosis. We aimed to find the relationship between CAVI and target organ damage (TOD), vascular structure and function, and cardiovascular risk factors in Caucasian patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus or metabolic syndrome. ⋯ The results of this study suggest that the CAVI is positively associated with IMT, cf-PWV, ba-PWV, CAIx, and PAIx, regardless of cardiovascular risk and the drug treatment used. Patients with cardiovascular TOD have higher values of CAVI.
