EditorialA practical approach to the prevention of miscarriage: Part 3--Passive immunotherapy.
To evaluate the efficacy of passive immunotherapy in preventing miscarriage. ⋯ Intravenous immunoglobulin therapy is very expensive. In the author's opinion there are no immunological studies that can determine if a woman needs immune suppression. The best way to decide is the history--the more miscarriages without any other identifiable cause the more likely passive immunotherapy may be helpful. If intralipid proves as efficacious as IVIG it will be a lot less expensive.

Catalase activity, serum trace element and heavy metal concentrations, vitamin A, vitamin D and vitamin E levels in hydatidiform mole.
In this study we aimed to measure the activity of catalase, which is an antioxidant enzyme, the concentrations of some trace elements and heavy metals, and vitamin A, D and E levels in serum samples of patients with hydatidiform mole, normal pregnancies and healthy non pregnant women. ⋯ The assessment of oxidant/antioxidant imbalance in pregnant women could be useful in the early determination of molar pregnancy and supplementation with antioxidants may be useful in the treatment of CHM, and may prevent recurrent molar pregnancy.

Comparative StudyThe contribution of anaesthesia modus on reducing blood loss during caesarean section.
The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of general anaesthesia (GA) and regional anaesthesia (RA) on the blood loss during caesarean section. We report on 161 patients undergoing both elective and emergency caesarean section at the Obstetrical Department of Democritus University of Thrace. ⋯ Although the preoperative Hgb and Hct levels did not differ significantly in the two groups RA vs GA, the postoperative Hgb and Hct levels were significantly lower in women who were subjected to GA compared to those who were subjected to RA (p < 0.05). The study showed that there is greater reduction in blood loss with RA compared to GA during caesarean section.

Regional anaesthesia for primary caesarean section in patients with preterm HELLP syndrome: a review of 102 cases.
To determine the feasibility and the safety of combined spinal/epidural and spinal anaesthetic techniques for primary caesarean section in case of preterm HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelets) syndrome. ⋯ Our data demonstrate that combined spinal/epidural is feasible and safe in selected cases of HELLP syndrome.
