Comparative Study
[Anxiety assessment in parturients requesting epidural analgesia for pain relief].
Neuraxial methods provide the most effective labor pain relief. This study aimed at assessing anxiety level in parturients requesting epidural analgesia (EA). ⋯ In parturients requesting EA, state anxiety level is increased and not connected with the trait. Furthermore, in these women, anxiety appears not to be associated with labor pain but may influence the analgesic effect of the blockade. Anxiety does not determine labor duration and outcome; however, it may be connected with the well-being of the neonate immediately after birth.

Breast cancer is the most common malignant carcinoma among women in Poland. In the year 2000 alone, 10987 new cases were registered. Mass-screening examinations are most effective method of fighting against breast cancer. The aim of this work was to estimate a mammography screening program in population of women at the ages between 50 to 69, which has been performed during 2004-2005 in the Regional General Hospital in Elblag. ⋯ 3161 mammography screening examinations were performed between 2004 and 2005. Women with detected breast cancer, mainly at the age 56-60, constituted 0.7% of the whole group. Patey's mastectomy was performed in above 50% of cases of all women, the remaining patients underwent conservative surgery. Only 10% of women have cancer at dissemination stage. Medical database of screening program contained incomplete descriptions of mammography results. Descriptions were not precise and not standardized.

Controlled Clinical Trial
[Efficacy of standardized isoflavones extract (Soyfem) (52-104 mg/24h) in moderate and medium-severe climacteric syndrome].
In recent years, considerable attention has been paid to isoflavones and their proprieties to alleviate the climacteric symptoms. The goal of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of standardized isoflavones extract (Soyfem) in moderate and medium-severe climacteric syndrome. ⋯ Administration of Soyfem in the dosage 52 to 104 mg/24 hours (2 times daily 1 or 2 tablets) is a safe and effective therapy in the postmenopausal women with moderate and medium-severe climacteric syndrome evaluated according to the Kupperman index. Administration of Soyfem is connected with a good compliance and correlated with well-being in the investigated women allowing a long-term administration.

Newborns weighing 4000g or heavier, are defined as macrosomic. ⋯ Women over 30, medium height or tall, who gain over 15 kilos during the pregnancy, tend to deliver macrosomic babies. Multiparas who had given birth to the marosomic babies once before, are predisposed to deliver macrosomic neonate in the following pregnancy. On the basis of our studies, we have determined 4kg as a borderline birth weight for increased frequency of parturient canal injuries.

The ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is still a difficult diagnostic and therapeutic problem. OHSS is associated with significant hypertrophy of the ovaries associated with the loss of the intravascular fluid to the third space which results in hypovolaemia, oliguria, electrolyte imbalance, and a rise in haematocrit. The endogenous OHSS is rare. ⋯ Therapy should be based on the correction of hypovolaemia, hypotension and oliguria. Antithrombotic prophylaxis is an integral part of the OHSS management. Some interesting attempts have been undertaken to re-infuse the protein-rich ascites fluid directly to the systemic circulation, so called continuous auto-transfusion system of the ascites (CATSA).
