Randomized Controlled TrialLactobacillus reuteri for Infants with Colic: A Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Randomized Clinical Trial.
To assess the safety of probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri strain Deutsche Sammlung von Mikroorganismen (DSM) 17938 with daily administration to healthy infants with colic and to determine the effect of L reuteri strain DSM 17938 on crying, fussing, inflammatory, immune, and microbiome variables. ⋯ Daily administration of L reuteri strain DSM 17938 appears to be safe in newborn infants with colic, including those with neutropenia, which frequently coexists. A placebo response of 66% suggests that many infants with colic will have resolution within 3 weeks.

Randomized Controlled TrialPulmonary Artery Pressures in School-Age Children Born Prematurely.
To test the hypothesis that pulmonary artery pressures were higher in school aged children born extremely premature than those born at term. We also wanted to assess whether pulmonary artery pressures differed between children born prematurely with or without bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) or between those randomized in the neonatal period to different ventilation modes. ⋯ Pulmonary artery pressures were estimated to be greater in 11- to 14-year-old children born extremely prematurely compared with those born at term and in those born prematurely who developed BPD compared with those who did not but did not differ significantly by neonatal ventilation mode.

Clinical TrialProspective Evaluation of Physical Contact with Critically Ill Child on Caregiver Spiritual Wellbeing.
To evaluate whether a pediatric intensive care unit initiative promoting physical contact between caregiver and patient improves caregiver spiritual wellbeing. The secondary objectives were to evaluate caregiver perceptions of care before and after the initiative and to follow unplanned extubation rate as a marker of safety of the initiative. We hypothesized that caregiver spiritual wellbeing and caregiver perceptions of care would improve with implementation of our physical contact initiative known as Project ROSE (Reach Out, Soothe, and Embrace). ⋯ Project ROSE improved caregiver spiritual wellbeing and perceptions of care, was implemented safely, addresses a need in family-centered care of critically ill pediatric patients, and merits consideration for integration into practice.

Comparative Study Observational StudyImpact of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program-Recommended Low Oxygen Strategy on Outcomes of Infants Born Preterm.
To evaluate the impact of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)-recommended low oxygen strategy (LOX) on neonatal morbidities, mortality, and neurodevelopmental outcomes in neonates born preterm. ⋯ The NRP-recommended LOX strategy was associated with improved respiratory morbidities and neurodevelopmental outcomes with no increase in mortality. Prospective trials to confirm the optimal oxygen strategy for the resuscitation of neonates born preterm are needed.
