Comparative StudyHigh flow nasal cannulae therapy in infants with bronchiolitis.
To determine whether the introduction of heated humidified high-flow nasal cannulae (HFNC) therapy was associated with decreased rates of intubation for infants <24 months old with bronchiolitis admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). ⋯ We hypothesize that HFNC decreases rates of intubation in infants with bronchiolitis by decreasing the respiratory rate and work of breathing by providing a comfortable and well-tolerated means of noninvasive ventilatory support.

Comparative StudyCortical visual function in preterm infants in the first year.
To assess visual function in low-risk preterm infants at 3, 5, and 12 months corrected age to determine whether the maturation of visual function in the first year is similar to that reported in term-born infants. ⋯ There is a specific profile of early visual behavior in low-risk preterm infants, with a high percentage of infants failing a test that specifically assesses visual attention and provides a measure of cortical processing.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyPrevention of hyponatremia during maintenance intravenous fluid administration: a prospective randomized study of fluid type versus fluid rate.
To determine the importance of sodium content versus administration rate of intravenous fluids in the development of hyponatremia in postoperative children. ⋯ The risk of hyponatremia was decreased by isotonic saline solution but not fluid restriction.

Multicenter StudyPeriocular ulcerative dermatitis associated with gentamicin ointment prophylaxis in newborns.
A recent shortage of erythromycin ointment has resulted in the use of alternative agents for newborn ocular infection prophylaxis in the United States. We report a series of 26 newborns in whom a characteristic periocular ulcerative dermatitis developed after gentamicin ointment administration at 2 Philadelphia hospitals.

Efficacy of local instillation of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator for restoring occluded central venous catheters in neonates.
To evaluate the efficacy of local instillation of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) for restoring function to occluded central venous catheters (CVCs) in the neonatal population. ⋯ Local instillation of tPA was successful in restoring function to occluded CVCs in a significant proportion of neonates, although success rates were lower than that reported in populations of older age. Despite the vulnerability of neonates to the potential complications of tPA, no major complications were detected even among premature infants.
