Neurosensory disabilities at school age in geographic cohorts of extremely low birth weight children born between the 1970s and the 1990s.
To contrast the rates of neurosensory disabilities at age 8 years in extremely low birth weight (ELBW; birth weight 500 to 999 g) children born in the state of Victoria, Australia in 4 four distinct eras from the late 1970s to the late 1990s. ⋯ The survival rate of ELBW children continues to rise over time. Despite this, however, the rates of disability in these vulnerable children at school age have remained stable and high relative to controls.

Comparative StudyMoving from bag to catheter for urine collection in non-toilet-trained children suspected of having urinary tract infection: a paired comparison of urine cultures.
To compare, in the same children, urine culture results from bag- versus catheter-obtained specimens with catheter culture as the reference. ⋯ Every bag-obtained positive-result urinalysis should be confirmed with a more reliable method before therapy.

Candles in the snow: ritual and memory for siblings of infants who died in the intensive care nursery.
To assess the developmental impact of surviving a sibling who dies in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). ⋯ Although death in the NICU often has a brief course, consequences for survivor siblings can be life-long. Siblings born both before and after the death of an infant may be at risk and in need of psychological support. Family rituals and photos are important vehicles of communication, grieving, and memory for siblings and parents alike. Clinicians should allow siblings to be active participants in the infant's brief life and death.

Sodium concentration in rehydration fluids for children with ketoacidotic diabetes: effect on serum sodium concentration.
To analyze in a retrospective cohort if sodium concentration in the rehydration fluids influence natremia in children with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). ⋯ Sodium concentration in the rehydration fluids behaves as an independent factor that influences positively the trend of the serum concentration of sodium during DKA rehydration. We propose the use of isotonic solutions for rehydration in diabetic ketoacidosis.

Preprinted order sets as a safety intervention in pediatric sedation.
Implement preprinted packets for pediatric procedural sedations to increase documentation compliance and decrease medication ordering errors. ⋯ Implementing preprinted physician orders, consent forms, and prepared packets increased documentation compliance and ordering of reversal agents and resuscitation equipment. Medication dosage ordering errors decreased.
