Mechanism of cerebral edema in children with diabetic ketoacidosis.
Cerebral edema during diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) has been attributed to osmotic cellular swelling during treatment. We evaluated cerebral water distribution and cerebral perfusion during DKA treatment in children. ⋯ Elevated ADC values during DKA treatment suggests a vasogenic process as the predominant mechanism of edema formation rather than osmotic cellular swelling.

Syncope in pediatric patients presenting to an emergency department.
To assess the epidemiology of syncope coming to medical attention among unselected children referred to an emergency department in Western Europe. ⋯ Syncope in children can result from a wide variety of causes. Consequently, an evaluation that fails to approach this problem in a goal-directed fashion proves to be very expensive, time-consuming, and frustrating to all concerned. Thorough history and physical examination are usually all that are necessary to guide practitioners in choosing the diagnostic tests that apply to a given patient.

Intracranial hemorrhage in premature neonates treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation correlates with conceptional age.
To determine the effect of patient age on the risk of intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) in premature neonates treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). ⋯ Postnatal age is not a strong independent predictor of ICH in premature neonates treated with ECMO. PCA is the best age-related predictor of ECMO-related ICH in premature infants.
