Clinical TrialHydroxyurea therapy associated with declining serum levels of magnesium in children with sickle cell anemia.
To obtain quantitative serum levels of total and ionized magnesium (Mg(2+)) in children with homozygous sickle cell anemia (SCA) undergoing therapy with hydroxyurea. ⋯ These findings warrant a controlled study of the effects of magnesium supplementation in patients with SCA receiving hydroxyurea. Potentially, such therapy could alleviate or prevent vaso-occlusive crises.

Predictors of outcome after acetaminophen poisoning in children and adolescents.
Shortened courses of N-acetylcysteine may be acceptable in patients with acetaminophen poisoning who are at low risk for toxicity. The goal of this study was to determine which clinical findings best identified patients at lowest risk for acetaminophen-related hepatotoxicity after an acute overdose. ⋯ These data suggest that all patients with an acute acetaminophen overdose should be observed and treated for at least 48 hours postingestion.

Comparative StudyImpaired postural cerebral hemodynamics in young patients with chronic fatigue with and without orthostatic intolerance.
To measure postural changes in cerebral hemodynamics in young patients with chronic fatigue with and without orthostatic intolerance. ⋯ Impaired cerebral hemodynamics in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome and postural orthostatic tachycardia suggest a link between impaired cerebral oxygenation and chronic fatigue. However, this cannot explain the symptoms in patients meeting the criteria of chronic fatigue without orthostatic intolerance.
