Children's hospitals with shorter lengths of stay do not have higher readmission rates.
To test the hypothesis that children's hospitals with shorter length of stay (LOS) for hospitalized patients have higher all-cause readmission rates. ⋯ In children's hospitals, LOS is short and readmission rates are low for asthma, appendectomy, gastroenteritis, and seizure admissions. In the conditions studied, there is no association between shorter hospital-specific LOS and higher readmission rates within the LOS observed.

Placental pathology in full-term infants with hypoxic-ischemic neonatal encephalopathy and association with magnetic resonance imaging pattern of brain injury.
To investigate the relationship between placental pathology and pattern of brain injury in full-term infants with neonatal encephalopathy after a presumed hypoxic-ischemic insult. ⋯ Placental weight <10th percentile was mainly associated with normal cerebral MRI findings. Decreased placental maturation and hypoglycemia <2.0 mmol/L were associated with increased risk of white matter/watershed injury with or without BGT involvement. Chronic villitis was associated with BGT injury irrespective of white matter injury.

Perinatal asphyxia with hyperoxemia within the first hour of life is associated with moderate to severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.
To determine whether early hyperoxemia in neonates with severe perinatal acidemia is associated with the development of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). ⋯ In neonates with perinatal acidemia, admission hyperoxemia is associated with a higher incidence of HIE. Among neonates with HIE, admission hyperoxemia is associated with abnormal brain magnetic resonance imaging findings. The judicious use of oxygen during and after resuscitation is warranted.

Predictors of 30-day readmission and association with primary care follow-up plans.
To test the hypothesis that missing primary care follow-up plans in the discharge summary is associated with higher 30-day readmissions. ⋯ Readmission rates are complex quality measures, and documenting primary care follow-up may be associated with higher rather than lower 30-day readmissions. Additional studies are needed to understand the inpatient-outpatient transition.

Young physicians' recall about pediatric training in ethics and professionalism and its practical utility.
To assess the adequacy of ethics and professionalism education in residency by examining the recollections of young pediatricians in practice. ⋯ The majority of recent graduates from pediatric training programs described themselves as competent to address the ethical and professionalism issues faced in practice, but nonetheless reported gaps in their education. As pediatric residency programs adopt more structured curricula for ethics and professionalism education, issues commonly faced by practitioners should be incorporated.
