Given the importance of ATP in the control of uterine activity for successful labor and involution, this study was performed to measure the level of P2X7 receptors (P2X7Rs) in rat myometrium at different gestational stages and to investigate the mechanisms of ATP-induced uterine contraction. ⋯ P2X7Rs are functionally regulated and contributed to ATP-induced uterine contraction. The sensitivity of the myometrium to ATP increases as pregnancy progresses and it involves Ca2+ influx and Ca2+ release pathways. The clear effects of ATP on contractility suggest its physiological requirement for successful labor and postpartum involution.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a severely neurodevelopmental disorder that impairs a child's ability to communicate and interact with others. Children with neurodevelopmental disorder, including ASD, are regularly affected by gastrointestinal problems and dysbiosis of gut microbiota. On the other hand, humans live in a co-evolutionary association with plenty of microorganisms that resident on the exposed and internal surfaces of our bodies. ⋯ The present review introduces the increasing evidence suggesting the reciprocal interaction network among microbiome, gut and brain. It also discusses the possible mechanisms by which gut microbiome influences the etiology of ASD via altering gut-brain axis. Most importantly, it highlights the new findings of targeting gut microbiome, including probiotic treatment and fecal microbiota transplant, as novel and potential therapeutics for ASD diseases.

Critically ill old patients sometimes require repeated surgical interventions, and thus it is important to determine the influence of repeated exposure to anesthetics on learning and memory. Sevoflurane, a widely used inhalation anesthetic, has few neurological adverse effects and offers a rapid return to consciousness. But the long-term influence of sevoflurane exposure and the effect of repeated sevoflurane exposure on cognition have rarely been reported, and available studies are contradictory. ⋯ Repeated exposure to sevoflurane impaired the learning and memory of old male rats, an impairment that was accompanied by cognition-related biochemical changes in the hippocampus.

Previous reports from our laboratory have established that morphine-6-O-sulfate (M6S) is a mixed μ/δ opioid receptor (OR) agonist and a potential improved alternative to morphine for treatment of chronic multimodal pain in non-diabetic rats. This study extends the antinociceptive effects of M6S and morphine in STZ-induced diabetic rats. ⋯ These studies provide additional confirmation for the mixed μ/δ activity of M6S and demonstrate potential improved clinical utility for dual μ/δ agonists relative to morphine in treatment of diabetic neuropathy across multiple pain domains.

Oxidative stress and inflammatory response are major factors causing several tissue injuries in intestinal ischemia and reperfusion (I/R). Agmatine has been reported to attenuate I/R injury of various organs. The present study aims to analyze the possible protective effects of agmatine on intestinal I/R injury in rats. ⋯ Our findings indicate that the agmatine pretreatment may ameliorate reperfusion induced injury in small intestine mainly due to reducing inflammatory response and oxidative stress.
