This study evaluated the relationships among copeptin, ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), and extent of myocardial injury in patients with acute carbon monoxide poisoning (ACOP). A total of 110 patients with different degrees of ACOP were selected as the poisoning group, and 30 healthy individuals as the control group. The levels of troponin I (cTnI), IMA, and copeptin were detected. ⋯ In the complication group, at 7 days after admission, the IMA levels decreased whereas the copeptin and cTnI levels were significantly higher than in the non-complication group, with a statistically significant difference (P < 0.05). IMA was negatively correlated with copeptin. IMA and copeptin detection is clinically useful in the early diagnosis and prognosis of ACOP-related myocardial injury and in guiding early clinical drug application.

We explored the expression and clinical significance of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Sixty-six patients with advanced NSCLC at the Oncology Department of Jinzhou Hospital were selected as an observation group between February and December 2013. Healthy volunteers and 20 benign lung disease patients were taken as a control group. ⋯ Eight cases displayed disease progression, of which five cases had <3 CTCs and three cases had ≥3CTCs. There was a statistically significant correlation between CTC changes and disease progression (P < 0.05). The CTC-positive rate correlated with the pathological staging and changes in the number of CTCs were associated with chemotherapy efficacy and disease progression.

The aim of this study was to determine whether vitamin D receptor (VDR) genetic polymorphisms are associated with the susceptibility to pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). MEDLINE and Embase databases and manual literature searches were used. A meta-analysis was conducted on the associations between the VDR FokI, TaqI, BsmI, and ApaI polymorphisms and PTB susceptibility. ⋯ Meta-analysis revealed no association between PTB susceptibility and the VDR TaqI t allele in all study subjects (OR = 0.986, 95%CI = 0.839-1.159, P = 0.866) or in individual ethnic populations. Furthermore, a risk of PTB was not associated with the BsmI and ApaI polymorphisms. This meta-analysis suggested that the VDR FokI polymorphism is associated with a susceptibility to PTB in East Asians.

We investigated the association between rs4753426 single nucleotide polymorphisms in the melatonin receptor 1B (MTNR1B) gene and the risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). A total of 516 gravidas (186 with GDM and 330 non-diabetic controls) were enrolled in the study. Genotype and allele frequencies of rs4753426 in the MTNR1B gene were detected by DNA sequencing. ⋯ In the GDM group, the C allele was associated with increased fasting plasma glucose level and reduced pancreatic β-cell function (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein concentration, or HOMA-IR between groups (P > 0.05). The single nucleotide polymorphism rs4753426 in MTNR1B may be a susceptibility gene locus for GDM, and the C allele may contribute to the increased fasting plasma glucose level and reduced pancreatic β-cell function.

Bispectral index for monitoring anesthetic depth in patients with severe burns receiving target-controlled infusion of remifentanil and propofol.
This study evaluated the feasibility and effectiveness of using the bispectral index (BIS) to monitor anesthetic depth in patients with severe burns receiving intravenous target-controlled infusion (TCI) of remifentanil and propofol. We randomly assigned 80 patients undergoing elective escharectomy (<1 week) to BIS (A) and control (B) groups. All patients received remifentanil and propofol as intravenous TCI anesthesia. ⋯ The time from drug withdrawal to eye opening upon the patient hearing his/her name called and reaching an Aldrete score of 9 points in group A was considerably shorter than that in group B (7.90 ± 0.58 vs 8.35 ± 0.66 min and 9.15 ± 0.69 vs 11.13 ± 0.96 min, respectively; P < 0.01). In both groups, mean arterial pressure and heart rate values at each time point after loss of consciousness were significantly lower than the baseline values (P < 0.05), with the exception of 2 min after intubation. The use of BIS to monitor anesthetic depth in patients with severe burns receiving TCI of remifentanil and propofol during the perioperative period reduces propofol consumption and shortens the consciousness recovery time in patients.
