The aim of this study was to determine the effect of etomidate and propofol pretreatment on the expression of glucocorticoid receptor and the prognosis of sepsis. The sepsis rat was used as a model. During glucocorticoid treatment, etomidate and propofol were applied alone or together at different time points. ⋯ Etomidate was best used immediately after modeling, whereas propofol was most suitable for use during the peak inflammatory reaction. These results demonstrated that anesthetics had the ability to enhance the effect of glucocorticoids in the treatment of sepsis. Etomidate was indicated for use in the early stage of inflammation to enhance expression of the glucocorticoid receptor, while propofol application was indicated at the peak of the inflammatory reaction owing to its strong anti-inflammation effect.

Remifentanil (an ultra-short acting μ-opioid receptor agonist) use has been associated with acute opioid tolerance and hyperalgesia. Previous electrophysiological studies have shown that remifentanil elicits rapid and prolonged upregulation of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) currents. However, the effect of remifentanil on the levels of the GluN1 subunit of the NMDAR in dorsal horn neurons (DHNs) has not been reported. ⋯ GluN1 mRNA and protein levels, determined by real time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Western blot, respectively, were significantly and persistently increased by remifentanil exposure compared with the control group (P < 0.05). These results may partially account for the mechanism of remifentanil-induced hyperalgesia. This increase was prevented by ketamine (NMDAR antagonist) and naloxone (μ-opioid receptors antagonist), thus providing a potential therapeutic mechanism for the prevention of opioid-induced hyperalgesia.

Numerous studies have evaluated the association between the human interleukin-10 gene -592C>A polymorphism and gastric cancer risk. However, the results have been inconsistent. This meta-analysis was designed to resolve these controversies. ⋯ In addition, the corresponding pooled ORs were not substantially altered after excluding one study that deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in the control group. This meta-analysis supports an association between the interleukin-10 gene -592C>A polymorphism and gastric cancer risk in Asians but not in Caucasians. Further large and well-designed studies are needed to confirm these conclusions.

Carotid atherosclerosis (CAS) has been extensively studied because its position can be easily observed. Our objective was to investigate the effects of Xuemaitong granules on the generation and activation of CD14+CD16+ monocytes on the inflammatory reaction in CAS patients. In this study, 22 male apolipoprotein E (apoE)-deficient mice were fed a high-fat diet for 13 weeks. ⋯ Compared with before treatment levels, the proportions of monocytes and their subsets of CD14+CD16+ inflammatory monocytes and the concentration of the inflammatory cytokines IL-6, TNF-a, and hsCRP significantly decreased. Xuemaitong granules played a significant role in the anti-inflammatory reactions. In addition, the granules attenuated the expression of the CD14+CD16+ inflammatory monocytes, resulting in the downregulation of the cytokines IL-6, TNF-a, and hsCRP.

This study aimed to detect micrometastatic tumor cells in the lymph nodes of patients with pN0 lung adenocarcinoma using a combination of thyroid transcription factor-1 (TTF-1) expression and cytokeratin 7 (CK7) expression and to investigate the association of lymph node micrometastasis with the clinicopathological characteristics of patients with lung adenocarcinoma. A total of 54 patients with pN0 lung adenocarcinoma and whose primary tumors were positive for both TTF-1 and CK7 expression were included in this study. In total, 893 lymph nodes were obtained from these 54 patients and were analyzed for micrometastasis by immunohistochemical staining with anti-CK7 and anti-TTF-1 antibodies. ⋯ No cells positive for both CK7 and TTF-1 were detected in the 5 lymph nodes obtained from patients with benign lung tumors. Lymph node micrometastasis was found to be associated with the differentiation grade and primary tumor position (P < 0.05). The detection of lymph node micrometastasis by a combination of CK7 and TTF-1 immunohistochemical staining provides a more accurate assessment of tumor staging for pN0 lung adenocarcinoma.
