Women with diabetes in pregnancy can be divided into two groups: women with diabetes diagnosed before pregnancy (pregestational diabetes) and women with glucose intolerance diagnosed during pregnancy (gestational diabetes mellitus). The majority of women with pregestational diabetes have insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), but may also include early-onset non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). ⋯ The expression of each of the forms of diabetes as a clinical disorder represents a complex interaction of genetic and environmental factors. The prevalence of GDM varies between 0.15 and 4% and the prevalence of pre-GDM 0.2-0.4% in European countries [1].

Seroprevalence and mother-to-infant transmission of hepatitis C in asymptomatic Egyptian women.
In this study, we sought to determine (1) the prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA, or its antibodies, in a healthy parturient Egyptian population and (2) the risk of mother-to-infant transmission in this population. ⋯ There is a high prevalence of anti-HCV in healthy pregnant Egyptian women and vertical transmission is a major risk for chronic HCV carriers.

Case ReportsAbdominal wall pain in pregnant women caused by thoracic lateral cutaneous nerve entrapment.
Three pregnant women presented with disabling lower abdominal wall pain unresponsive to conventional therapies. The striking similarities among the clinical signs and symptoms prompted a review of the literature and led to the suspicion of thoracic lateral cutaneous nerve entrapment, a syndrome reported in other conditions, including after surgery, but not during pregnancy. Treatment by nerve block with local anesthetics was rapidly and completely successful in relieving the symptoms.

Clinical Trial Controlled Clinical TrialPlasma concentrations of beta-endorphin and adrenocorticotropic hormone in women with and without childbirth preparation.
We studied plasma concentrations of beta-endorphin (beta-EP) and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) during dilation, expulsion and immediate puerperium in 47 primiparous women with an uneventful pregnancy and spontaneous vaginal delivery. Twenty-five women had received childbirth preparation with the Lamaze method, and 22 had received no preparation. ⋯ We discuss the role of childbirth preparation as a way to enhance beta-EP secretion. Levels of ACTH, on the other hand, appear to be more closely related with behavior during labor, regardless of whether the mother received preparation.

Case ReportsMyotonic dystrophy in pregnancy: a report of two cases within one family.
myotonic dystrophy, also called the Curschmann-Steinert syndrome, is an autosomal dominant inherited neuromuscular disorder characterized by progressive muscular dystrophy, muscle weakness and myotonia, which can affect both mother and child. Complications may arise during pregnancy, delivery, including anaesthetic problems, and in the neonatal period. ⋯ The clinical diagnosis can be confirmed by direct DNA analysis in serum and in chorionvillus biopsy material. In this case report two sisters with myotonic dystrophy are described, their pregnancies, deliveries and the outcome of their affected babies.
