Sedative-hypnotic treatment in an acute psychiatric setting: comparison with best practice guidance.
The aim of this study was to review treatment patterns of sedative-hypnotic agents within an acute adult inpatient psychiatric service, compare prescribing with best-practice recommendations for use and explore potential interventions. ⋯ The use of sedative-hypnotic treatment in the acute adult inpatient psychiatric environment compared favourably with best practice recommendations regarding dose, duration of treatment and discharge treatment. The study identified key areas for intervention by clinical pharmacists to ensure appropriate use of sedative-hypnotics including in-service education, regular review of all sedative-hypnotic treatment and discharge medication planning.

To explore pharmacists' perceptions on the use of economic evaluations in decision-making within Medicine Management Committees (MMCs), identify factors that influence the uptake of economic evidence and examine the usefulness of different presentations of economic evidence. ⋯ This study found the use of economic evidence in decision-making at both MMCs was limited. To improve the usefulness of economic evaluations in MMCs, members of MMCs will need more training in accessing, understanding and appraising economic evidence; researchers need to improve the credibility and transferability of economic studies, and present the results in clear and understandable ways. However, due to the restricted focus of local, short-term drug budgets, evidence-based decision-making remains a challenge for local MMCs.

To investigate medical practitioners' perceptions, expectations and experience with the role of hospital-based pharmacists in Sudan. ⋯ Respondents appeared receptive to most statements regarding expectations of pharmacists, suggesting that many elements of patient-centred pharmaceutical care could be introduced with the co-operation of physicians. A key to extending the role of pharmacists in Sudan teaching hospitals should involve making pharmacists more accessible to doctors and patients, ideally, supported by an organised program of continuing professional development.

Cost analysis applied to postoperative analgesia regimens: a comparison between parecoxib and propacetamol.
Postoperative pain management represents a significant part of perioperative costs. Non-opioid analgesics are often used in combination with opiates to improve pain relief and reduce opioid-related side effects. ⋯ Parecoxib exhibits higher cost and greater patient satisfaction than does propacetamol. From a cost-efficacy approach, incremental cost per additional patient satisfied for parecoxib treatment must be analysed in light of overall perioperative pharmaceutical cost.

Natural remedies in Scandinavia-authorization and sales.
to quantify sales of authorized natural remedies (ANRs) in Norway, to compare the Norwegian authorization scheme with similar schemes in Sweden, Denmark and the EU, and to identify factors influencing the number of marketed ANRs. ⋯ sales of authorized compared to unauthorized natural remedies in Norway are very low and the ANRs are in a weak position compared to Denmark and Sweden. Surveillance by health authorities and increased consumer knowledge of ANRs is probably more stimulating with respect to application incentive than lower application costs. Introducing THMs will hopefully increase the number of quality-controlled products on the Scandinavian market.
