Effect of NMDAR antagonists in the tetrabenazine test for antidepressants: comparison with the tail suspension test.
The N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) antagonist ketamine, produces rapid and enduring antidepressant effect in patients with treatment-resistant depression. Similar dramatic effects have not been observed in clinical trials with other NMDAR antagonists indicating ketamine may possess unique pharmacological properties. Tetrabenazine induces ptosis (a drooping of the eyelids), and the reversal of this effect, attributed to a sympathomimetic action, has been used to detect first-generation antidepressants, as well as ketamine. Because the actions of other NMDAR antagonists have not been reported in this measure, we examined whether reversal of tetrabenazine-induced ptosis was unique to ketamine, or a class effect of NMDAR antagonists. ⋯ The ability to reverse tetrabenazine-induced ptosis is a class effect of NMDAR antagonists. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that the inability of memantine, AZD6765 (lanicemine) and MK-0657 to reproduce the rapid and robust antidepressant effects of ketamine in the clinic result from insufficient dosing rather than a difference in mechanism of action among these NMDAR antagonists.

The relation of sexual dysfunction to depression and anxiety in patients with Parkinson's disease.
In this study, we aimed to find out whether sexual dysfunction in patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD) was associated to PD-related disability and whether this relationship was modulated by depressive and anxiety symptoms. ⋯ In patients with PD, there may be a common factor that modulates both depression, anxiety and sexual function. Further studies are needed to clarify the exact relationship.

To what extent psychiatric patients feel involved in decision making about their mental health care? Relationships with socio-demographic, clinical, and psychological variables.
Shared decision making (SDM) is an essential component of patient-centered care, but there is little information about its use in the psychiatric care. ⋯ The result of this study suggests that SDM is currently not widely practiced in psychiatric care. Further research is needed to examine if the low level of participation self-reported is justified by psychiatric patients' decisional capacity.

Pilot study on the European Portuguese version of the Confusion Assessment Method.
To present the pilot study on the European Portuguese validation of the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM). ⋯ These preliminary results suggested that this version emerges as a promising diagnostic instrument for delirium.

Psychiatric side effects of ketamine in hospitalized medical patients administered subanesthetic doses for pain control.
To assess the psychiatric side effects of ketamine when administered in subanesthetic doses to hospitalized patients. It is hypothesized that such effects occur frequently. ⋯ Awareness of the psychiatric side effects of ketamine is an important consideration for clinicians administering this medication either for pain control or for depressive illness.
