Vascular hyporeactivity plays an important role in severe trauma and shock. We investigated the beneficial effect of cyclosporine A (CsA) on traumatic shock and its relationship to vascular reactivity improvement and mitochondrial permeability transition pore (MPTP). ⋯ CsA is beneficial for the treatment of traumatic hemorrhagic shock. The mechanism is mainly through improving the vascular reactivity, stabilizing the hemodynamics, and increasing tissue perfusion. This beneficial effect of CsA is related to the inhibitory effect of CsA on MPTP opening. ROCK is an important regulator molecule in this process.

Racial disparities remain for women undergoing immediate breast reconstruction (IBR) after mastectomy. Understanding patterns of racial disparities in IBR utilization may present opportunities to tailor policies aimed at optimizing care across racial groups. The aim of this study was to determine if racial disparities exist for types of IBR chosen. ⋯ Utilization of IBR may be a sensitive measure of disparities in access to high-quality care and underlying cultures. Strategies aimed at reducing racial disparities in IBR should be tailored to specific patterns of disparities among Asian, black, and Hispanic women.

Salidroside (SDS) is the main effective component of Rhodiola rosea L with a variety of pharmacologic properties. The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of SDS in the treatment of experimental sepsis in mice and explore the possible underlying action mechanisms. ⋯ SDS exerts a protective effect in CLP-induced sepsis by attenuating the proinflammatory responses, enhancing bacterial clearance, and preserving adaptive immunity. SDS may be a promising therapeutic strategy for the treatment of sepsis.

Using negative pressure wound therapy on microskin autograft wounds.
Microskin autografts with conventional wrap and compression are used extensively in the treatment of skin and tissue defects. This comparative study aimed at investigation of the clinical application of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) in combination with microskin autografts for repair of acute and chronic wounds. ⋯ NPWT is beneficial for wound closure after microskin autografts, which prolongs the interval between skin transplantation and first postoperative dressing change, reduces pain during removal of inner layer dressing, increases skin graft survival rate, and shortens wound healing time. Therefore, NPWT can be recommended for repair of acute and chronic wounds with microskin autografts.

Paraplegia secondary to spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion injury remains a devastating complication of thoracoabdominal aortic intervention. The complex interactions between injured neurons and activated leukocytes have limited the understanding of neuron-specific injury. We hypothesize that spinal cord neuron cell cultures subjected to oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) would simulate ischemia-reperfusion injury, which could be attenuated by specific alpha-2a agonism in an Akt-dependent fashion. ⋯ Using a novel spinal cord neuron cell culture, OGD mimics neuronal metabolic derangement responsible for paraplegia after aortic surgery. Dex preserves neuronal viability and decreases apoptosis in an Akt-dependent fashion. Dex demonstrates clinical promise for reducing the risk of paraplegia after high-risk aortic surgery.
