The understanding of coagulopathy associated with trauma continues to evolve. Trauma patients are frequently coagulopathic early after injury and become hypercoagulable within days of injury. Thrombelastography (TEG) allows real-time evaluation of the coagulation status of patients. We hypothesized that TEG will identify post-traumatic hypercoagulable state in our porcine model of hemorrhagic shock and resuscitation. ⋯ Hypercoagulability is present early after surgical intervention and trauma. This finding has implications for use of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) prophylaxis in trauma patients.

Calorie restriction (CR) exerts cytoprotective effects by up-regulating survival factors, such as mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), sirtuin, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ co-activator 1α (PGC-1α). These survival factors have well-established roles in attenuating the inflammatory response. However, it is unclear whether CR affects sepsis-related inflammation. The purpose of this study was to determine whether CR affects sepsis-induced inflammation in a cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-induced mouse model of sepsis. ⋯ Alternate day calorie restriction decreased mortality in a mouse model of sepsis. In addition to attenuated organ injury, a significant reduction in cytokine and HMGB1 levels was observed. These findings suggest that alternative day calorie restriction may reduce excessive inflammation.

Interleukin (IL)-17A is a proinflammatory cytokine and plays an important role in neutrophil recruitment. We investigate the role of IL-17A in a mouse polymicrobial sepsis model. ⋯ IL-17A play pivotal role in host defense during septic peritonitis.

Few studies have examined the effects of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on intestinal anastomotic healing. The applied preparation methods and PRP concentrations used in the few studies that have been carried out varied markedly. Therefore, the positive effects of PRP on the anastomotic healing process remain unclear. The aim of this study is to examine the effects of different concentrations of PRP on intestinal anastomotic healing. ⋯ PRP concentration plays a crucial role in the efficacy of PRP. PRP might exert positive effects on intestinal anastomotic healing in a dose-dependent manner up to a certain level, but adverse effects occur when it is highly concentrated. The essential PRP action appears to be driven by the platelets themselves.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common in the intensive care unit, and one of its primary causes is renal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. Human atrial natriuretic peptide (hANP) exerts various pharmacologic effects, including renal protection. In the present study, we evaluated the renal protective effect of hANP in a rat model of renal I/R. ⋯ Our findings indicate that hANP may be effective in the treatment of various types of I/R injuries.
