Oxidative stress and inflammatory response are crucial in mediating the development of acute lung injury induced by bilateral lower limb ischemia-reperfusion (I/R). Platonin, a potent antioxidant, possesses anti-inflammation capacity. We sought to elucidate whether platonin could mitigate acute lung injury induced by lower limb I/R. ⋯ Platonin mitigates acute lung injury induced by bilateral lower limb I/R in rats.

The derangement in oxygen utilization occurring during sepsis is likely to be linked to impaired mitochondrial functioning. Skeletal muscle comprises 50%-60% of body cell mass and represents the largest organ potentially affected by systemic inflammation. Thus, we investigated whether sepsis induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) modifies mitochondrial activity in respiratory and nonrespiratory skeletal muscle. ⋯ Our results suggest that quadriceps mitochondria are more resistant to sepsis-induced dysfunction.

The volume-outcomes relationship for United States Level I trauma centers.
Previous studies of the center volume-outcomes relationship for severe trauma care have yielded conflicting findings regarding the presence or nature of such a relationship. Few studies have confined their analysis to Level I centers. ⋯ Our findings support the current utilization by the American College of Surgeons of minimum annual volume requirements for the verification of Level I trauma center designation, and suggest that the presence of such verification may enable Level I centers to effectively manage high volume of severely injured adult patients.

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of doxycycline on renal ischemia reperfusion (I/R) injury in a rat model of abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS). ⋯ Doxycycline had protective effects on I/R injury by decreasing apoptosis via reducing the level of pro-inflammatory cytokines, increasing the level of TIMP-1, and inhibiting the activity of MMP-2.

Perioperative supplemental oxygen has been proposed to decrease the incidence of surgical site infection (SSI) in colorectal surgery. A number of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have been reported with inconsistent results. In addition, relevant clinical outcomes other than SSIs have been collected in these studies and have been equivocal. A meta-analysis of RCTs was performed to elucidate the effects of perioperative supplemental oxygen in colorectal surgery on SSI incidence, mortality, ICU admission, and length of stay. ⋯ Perioperative supplemental oxygen in colorectal surgery does not significantly reduce SSI. However, supplemental oxygen appears to confer a mortality benefit, a previously unreported finding. Further RCTs are required to confirm these conclusions.
