Left atrial assist device to treat patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction: Initial in vitro study.
Many patients with heart failure have preserved ejection fraction but also diastolic dysfunction, with no effective therapy. We are developing a new pump (left atrial assist device, LAAD) for implantation at the mitral position to pump blood from the left atrium to sufficiently fill the left ventricle. The purpose of the initial in vitro study was to demonstrate that the LAAD can reduce left atrial pressure (LAP) and increase cardiac output (CO) while maintaining arterial pulsatility and normal aortic valve function using a proof-of-concept device. ⋯ These initial in vitro results support our hypothesis that use of the LAAD increases CO and AoP and decreases LAP under DHF conditions while maintaining arterial pulsatility and full function of the aortic valve.

Effect of primary colorectal cancer tumor location on survival after pulmonary metastasectomy.
Although colorectal cancer bowel segment location has been shown to independently predict the outcomes in early stage disease, it has not been previously studied in the setting of pulmonary metastases. We sought to determine whether colorectal cancer location affects survival after pulmonary metastasectomy. ⋯ We found that left-sided colorectal cancer is associated with prolonged survival after pulmonary metastasectomy. Future investigations are required to determine the validity of such findings, including the effect of location in the prognostication for patients who are candidates for pulmonary metastasectomy.

Association of overlapping cardiac surgery with short-term patient outcomes.
This study seeks to assess the safety of overlap in cardiac surgery. ⋯ Nonconcurrent, overlapping surgery is not associated with an increase in adverse outcomes in a large, matched cardiac surgery population.

Outflow tract geometries are associated with adverse outcome indicators in repaired tetralogy of Fallot.
A wide variety of right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) and pulmonary artery (PA) geometries has been reported in patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot (rTOF). We aimed to investigate the associations between RVOT/PA geometries and outcome indicators in a large rTOF cohort receiving non-conduit repair. ⋯ Distinct RVOT morphologies and branch PA size discrepancy are associated with variations in RV remodeling and exercise capacity in patients with rTOF. These findings may aid decision-making regarding reintervention for PR and branch PA size discrepancy.

Recovery of hibernating myocardium using stem cell patch with coronary bypass surgery.
This study aims to investigate the utility of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) applied as an epicardial patch during coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) to target hibernating myocardium; that is, tissue with persistently decreased myocardial function, in a large animal model. ⋯ In hibernating myocardium, placement of a stem cell patch during CABG shows promise in improving myocardial function by improving mitochondrial morphology and function.
