Comparative StudyExtensive cell salvage and postoperative outcomes following thoracoabdominal and descending aortic repair.
Cell salvage (CS) reduces intraoperative blood transfusion. However, it may cause deformity of the red blood cells and loss of coagulation factors, which may lead to unwanted sequelae. Thus, we hypothesized that extensive CS would lead to adverse outcomes after descending/thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (D/TAAA) repair. ⋯ Increased salvaged cell units were associated with adverse postoperative outcomes after D/TAAA repairs. Risk of renal failure and mortality increased proportionally to the salvaged cell units.

Observational StudyMinimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum by the Nuss procedure: The learning curve.
To define the learning process of minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum by the Nuss procedure through assessment of consecutive procedural metrics. ⋯ After a 10-procedure proctoring period, repair of pectus excavatum by the Nuss procedure is a safe procedure to adopt and perform without a typical (complication based) learning curve while performing at least 1 procedure per 35 days.

Understanding the literature: Complexity of statistical methods used in high-impact cardiothoracic surgery research.
Biostatistics are frequently used in research published in the domain of cardiothoracic surgery. The objective of this study was to describe the scope of statistical techniques reported in the literature and to highlight implications for editorial review and critical appraisal. ⋯ Contemporary cardiothoracic surgery research frequently requires the use of complex statistical methods. This was evident across articles for all cardiothoracic surgical subspecialties as reported in 3 high-impact journals. Routine review of manuscript submissions by biostatisticians is needed to ensure the appropriate use and reporting of advanced statistical methods in cardiothoracic surgery research.
