Review Meta AnalysisRecruitment maneuvers to reduce pulmonary atelectasis after cardiac surgery: A meta-analysis of randomized trials.
Pulmonary atelectasis is a common postoperative complication that may lead to intrapulmonary shunt, refractory hypoxemia, and respiratory distress. Recruitment maneuvers may relieve pulmonary atelectasis in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. We conducted a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials to evaluate the effectiveness of recruitment maneuvers in these patients. ⋯ Recruitment maneuvers may reduce postoperative pulmonary atelectasis, hypoxic events, and pneumonia and improve Pao2/Fio2 ratios without hemodynamic disturbance in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

Cardiac paraganglioma is a rare tumor that most surgeons have limited experience treating. The objective of this study is to examine the management and outcomes for cardiac paraganglioma treatment when cared for by a multidisciplinary cardiac tumor team. ⋯ Cardiac paraganglioma presents a surgical challenge. Mortality and long-term survival after surgical resection are acceptable but may require complex resection and reconstruction.

Randomized Controlled TrialRisk prediction of occult lymph node metastasis in patients with clinical T1 through T2 N0 esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.
To investigate long-term survival outcomes and develop a risk model for occult lymph node metastasis (LNM) in patients with clinical T1 through T2 N0 esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. ⋯ Our risk scoring system for predicting occult LNM in clinical T1 through T2 N0 esophageal cancer has high accuracy and good discriminant ability.

History of cancer and survival after coronary artery bypass grafting: Experiences from the SWEDEHEART registry.
To explore the currently unknown association between history of cancer at the time of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and long-term survival. ⋯ The proportion of patients undergoing CABG with a history of cancer has increased over time. History of cancer at the time of surgery is associated with increased cancer deaths over time but not cardiovascular deaths. The same cardiovascular prognosis after CABG can be expected regardless of cancer history.
