Early posthospitalization recovery after extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in survivors of COVID-19.
We sought to determine the influence of venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) on outcomes of mechanically ventilated patients with COVID-19 during the first 120 days after hospital discharge. ⋯ Our data suggest that COVID-19 survivors experience significant physical, psychological, and cognitive deficits following intensive care unit admission. Despite a more complex critical illness course, longer average duration of mechanical ventilation, and longer average length of stay, patients treated with venovenous ECMO had similar survival at discharge and outcomes within 120 days of discharge.

Public reporting for coronary artery bypass graft surgery: The quest for the optimal scorecard.
A number of publicly available rating algorithms are used to assess hospital performance in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). However, concerns remain that these algorithms fail to correlate with each other and inadequately capture the case complexity of individual center practices. ⋯ Correlations between current CABG public reporting systems are weak. Further work is needed to refine and standardize CABG rating systems to more adequately capture the scope and complexity of an individual center's clinical practice and to better inform patients.

Norwood operation versus comprehensive stage II after bilateral pulmonary artery banding palliation for infants with critical left heart obstruction.
To determine patient characteristics and outcomes after Norwood versus comprehensive stage II (COMPSII) for infants with critical left heart obstruction who had prior hybrid palliation (bilateral pulmonary artery banding ± ductal stent). ⋯ Higher prevalence of prematurity, lower birth weight, and other patient-related characteristics in the Norwood versus COMPSII groups may influence differences in outcomes that were not statistically significant for this limited risk-adjusted cohort. The clinical decision regarding Norwood versus COMPSII after initial hybrid palliation remains challenging.

Novel targeted therapy and immunotherapy drugs have recently been approved for use in patients with surgically resectable lung cancer. Accurate staging, early molecular testing, and knowledge of recent trials are critical to optimize oncologic outcomes in these patients.
