Efficacy and Safety of a Transaortic Approach to Midventricular and Apical Septal Myectomy.
The study objective was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a transaortic approach to midventricular and apical septal myectomy in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with left ventricular outflow tract or midventricular obstruction. ⋯ Most patients undergoing septal myectomy for relief of obstruction required resection beyond the basal septum. With specialized instrumentation, detailed imaging and knowledge of variable septal anatomy, resecting midventricular and apical septal muscle can be safely and effectively achieved through a transaortic approach.

Multicenter Study Comparative Study Observational StudyFeatures and Outcomes of Females and Males Requiring Postcardiotomy Extracorporeal Life Support.
Although cardiogenic shock requiring extracorporeal life support after cardiac surgery is associated with high mortality, the impact of sex on outcomes of postcardiotomy extracorporeal life support remains unclear with conflicting results in the literature. We compare patient characteristics, in-hospital outcomes, and overall survival between females and males requiring postcardiotomy extracorporeal life support. ⋯ This study demonstrates that female and male patients requiring postcardiotomy extracorporeal life support have different preoperative and extracorporeal life support characteristics, as well as complications, without a statistical difference in in-hospital and 5-year survivals.
