Newly created animal model of human postoperative junctional ectopic tachycardia.
Junctional ectopic tachycardia complicates the postoperative recovery from open heart surgery in children. The reported risk factors include younger age, prolonged cardiopulmonary bypass times, and administration of inotropic agents. Junctional ectopic tachycardia occurs early after open heart surgery, in the setting of relative postoperative sinus node dysfunction, and exhibits QRS morphology consistent with an origin from the atrioventricular node or proximal conduction system. Our goal was to develop a reproducible animal model for postoperative junctional ectopic tachycardia. ⋯ Experimental junctional ectopic tachycardia or fascicular tachycardia can occur in the intraoperative setting of sinus node dysfunction, prolonged cardiopulmonary bypass, and enhanced conduction system automaticity. Conduction system automaticity occurred after either physical injury (ablation or tricuspid valve stretch) or measures to augment the transient inward current of the conduction system (isoproterenol and digoxin). This animal model can serve as the basis to assess new treatments of postoperative junctional ectopic tachycardia.

Prognosis of patients undergoing emergency surgery for type A acute aortic dissection without exclusion of the intimal tear.
To investigate the prognosis after emergency surgery for acute type A aortic dissection with an unknown entry site and to identify the predictors of postoperative aortic dilatation. ⋯ The prognosis of patients without exclusion of the entry site was acceptable. Careful follow-up is needed for patients with a patent false lumen or nonexcluded entry because of the risk of aortic dilatation.

Single-center experience using the Freedom SOLO aortic bioprosthesis.
This study reviews a single institution experience with the Freedom SOLO (Sorin Group, Saluggia, Italy) aortic bioprosthesis. ⋯ The Freedom SOLO stentless aortic valve has excellent early and intermediate-term results.

Improvement of left atrial function and left atrial reverse remodeling after minimally invasive radiofrequency ablation evaluated by 2-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography.
The present study was aimed at demonstrating the beneficial effect of minimally invasive radiofrequency surgical ablation on left atrial remodeling using 2-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography. ⋯ Minimally invasive radiofrequency ablation resulted in significant left atrial reverse remodeling and significant improvement in left atrial compliance and function after restoration of sinus rhythm, as demonstrated by 2-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography analysis. Our findings need to be confirmed by additional and larger prospective studies.

A novel fluorescence technique for identification of the pulmonary segments by using the photodynamic diagnosis endoscope system: an experimental study in ex vivo porcine lung.
Photodynamic diagnosis is a technique that has been proposed to enhance tumor detection and resection. We modified this technique to identify pulmonary segments and examine the feasibility of this technique in ex vivo porcine lungs. ⋯ This florescence technique using vitamin B2 and the photodynamic diagnosis endoscope system is useful to identify the target pulmonary segment easily and clearly in ex vivo porcine lung.
