Diagnostic approaches to depression have been changed during last decades. The criteria of a depressive episode have become more formalized but too broad. ⋯ It is making possible to reveal a lot of typical and atypical depressive conditions, and to offer an aid for many people with mental health problems. At the same time, the absence of the strict clinical criteria didn't allow to "translate" modern instrumental findings into scientific understanding of depression and, further on, into practice.

[Complex therapy of idiopathic forms of epilepsy with small doses of valproates and levetiracetam].
A combination of valproates in dose 15-25 mg per day and levetiracetam in dose 20-25 mg per day was used in the treatment of 23 patients with different forms of epilepsy (juvenile myoclonic epilepsy, juvenile absence epilepsy, convulsive idiopathic generalized epilepsy and children absence epilepsy). The use of these drugs was effective in all forms of epilepsy. There were positive changes in the frequency of seizures and epileptic activity in the EEG.

[Diagnosis of sympathetically maintained pain in posttraumatic complex regional pain syndrome with laser Doppler flowmetry].
Forty-nine patients with posttraumatic complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) of the upper extremities were investigated by laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) with wavelet-analysis of skin blood flow oscillations. Clinical evaluation of sympathetically maintained pain was carried out after the thoracoscopic clipping above and below the Тh3 ganglion of sympathetic chain) in 33 patients and after the perivascular sympathectomy at the level of brachial artery and veins) in 16 patients. The objective diagnosis of sympathetically maintained pain was created with LDF; it was directed specially to discovery of sensory-sympathetic coupling in CRPS. Sensitivity of preoperative LDF − diagnosis was 90.2%, specificity − 87.5%, positive predictive value − 97.3%, negative predictive value − 63.6%, diagnostic effectiveness − 89.8%.
