In this study, we evaluated the prognostic value of the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) and the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) in patients with unilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). ⋯ DHI and THI questionnaires may have limited prognostic value for patients with unilateral SSNHL.

To test the validity and test-retest reliability of the Dutch translation of the Chronic Otitis Media Questionnaire 12 (COMQ-12). ⋯ The Dutch version of the COMQ-12 has good validity, diagnostic accuracy, and test-retest reliability.

Cisplatin is a chemotherapeutic agent that is widely used in cancer treatment. Numerous side effects have been detected, one of which is ototoxicity. Melatonin, a product of the pineal gland, has a neuroendocrinoimmunological role in vertebrates. In the present study, we investigated the effects of melatonin on cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. ⋯ As an antioxidant and immune modulator, melatonin is effective against cisplatin ototoxicity. Both hearing thresholds and tissue investigations supported this conclusion. Melatonin can also be used to treat cisplatin ototoxicity using transtympanic local application in lower doses.

To investigate changes in Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and their antibiotic sensitivities over 13 years in patients diagnosed with chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). ⋯ Bacteria isolated from patients with CSOM showed little change between 2001 and 2013, whereas their antibiotic resistance showed changes; in particular, increased PA resistance to quinolones was observed. Empirical antibiotic treatment can lead to bacterial resistance, and changes in antimicrobial agents commonly used to treat CSOM should be considered.

The possible preventive effect of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) in gentamicin ototoxicity was studied with auditory brain stem responses (ABRs), otoacoustic emissions (OAEs), and histopathological investigation of the cochlea. ⋯ Gentamicin ototoxicity can be detected by ABR and OAE testing in rats, and NAC may protect the cochlear cells from apoptosis.
