Hematoma is a potentially life-threatening complication of thyroid surgery. Ketorolac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug with known antiplatelet activity that is used for analgesia. The goal of this study was to determine the risk of hematoma in patients who received ketorolac in thyroid surgery. ⋯ Although there was an increased incidence of hematomas in the group receiving ketorolac, the difference was not statistically significant. The lack of significance may be due to the low number of hematomas.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyDouble-blinded, randomized, controlled trial of medicated versus nonmedicated merocel sponges for functional endoscopic sinus surgery.
This study aimed to compare differences between medicated and nonmedicated Merocel middle meatal spacers (MMSs) on sinonasal mucosal healing (histopathologic and endoscopic difference), patient discomfort, and pain on removal of the MMS following functional endoscopic sinus surgery. ⋯ Although our study failed to show any significant benefit from the addition of medication to the Merocel MMS, further studies with different compounds are recommended to determine whether a medicated MMS could indeed be a superior alternative to the standard MMS.

Hearing loss owing to ototoxicity in humans is usually presumed to be irreversible and stable. Most articles in the literature study the effects of ototoxic agents such as cisplatin only over a few days or weeks. This study focused on the recovery of hearing over several months in mice. The same treatment was applied to guinea pigs to determine whether there were significant differences in response between the two species. ⋯ In general, ototoxicity end points should be assessed more than 1 month after exposure for animals. Our observation that hearing loss is incomplete before 1 month in mice opens the possibility of studies for preventive treatment during that time.
