Thyroid carcinomas can occur as a primary malignancy (PTM) or secondary after another malignancy (STM). Information about the presentations and outcomes of patients with STM are limited. The authors sought to compare the clinical characteristics, course, and outcomes of patients with primary or secondary thyroid malignancies. ⋯ Pediatric thyroid carcinoma is uncommon and responds well to current therapy. Given the limited period of follow-up of our cohort of secondary malignant thyroid tumors that arise after childhood cancer, these lesions appear to have similar presentations and outcomes when compared with primary carcinomas and can therefore be managed in the same manner.

Injuries in children associated with the use of nonmotorized scooters.
Since 2000, a substantial increase in injuries related to nonmotorized scooters (kickboards) has been observed among children. The authors conducted a population-based prospective study to characterize these injuries in comparison with skateboard-related injuries during the same period. ⋯ Public awareness of the potential dangers related to scooter riding should be increased and the use of protective gear encouraged.

Gastrointestinal hormone secretion after surgery in neonates with congenital intestinal anomalies during starvation and introduction of enteral nutrition.
Gastrointestinal hormones modulate gut function in response to enteral nutrition. Infants with a congenital intestinal anomaly with loss of bowel length either pre-or postnatal, who are on total parenteral nutrition for prolonged periods after surgery, are especially prone to a disturbed secretion of gut hormones. The aim of this study was to determine whether circulating gut hormones were altered in these patients and to collect baseline data for future studies in short bowel patients using different enteral substrates. ⋯ Neonates with a congenital intestinal anomaly in the absence of a short bowel have a similar secretion pattern of gastrointestinal hormones as neonates with a structurally normal intestinal tract, both during starvation and enteral nutrition.

The authors report on a neonate who presented with acute appendicitis and who went on to have fatal necrotizing fasciitis. Although recognized in adults, this rare combination of conditions has not been reported previously in the neonate and requires rapid recognition with aggressive medical and surgical intervention.

Laparoscopically assisted gastric pull-up procedure has been performed in adults for various conditions. The authors report the first patient, who underwent laparoscopically assisted esophageal replacement for long gap esophageal atresia. ⋯ This is the first report on laparoscopically assisted gastric pull-up for long gap esophageal atresia. The technique represents an option for the treatment of long gap esophageal atresia.
