The purpose of this study was to capture the meaning of professional success to experienced physiotherapists practising in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). ⋯ The physiotherapists in this study described different indicators of success than have been described by other health care or corporate professionals in the literature. Success in the physiotherapy profession is experienced as a circular rather than linear process. Physiotherapists, professional organizations, and employers have a role in fostering professional success. We suggest the introduction of mentorship and self-reflection programmes early in one's career, focusing on the three markers of success: patient outcomes, career advancement, and advancement of the profession.

Prison inmates, like the population at large, are entitled to physiotherapy care. However, the lack of information in the literature suggests physiotherapy in prisons is not commonplace. Where it does occur, the physiotherapist is often confronted by unfamiliar and unpleasant circumstances as there are significant differences between community or hospital based practices and a prison practice. ⋯ Problems relating to jail security and attitudes are discussed. Health and behavioural problems unique to prison inmates are explored and methods of dealing with them examined. The physiotherapist's role in prison health care is addressed and, finally, some ideas for increasing the profile of physiotherapy in prisons are presented.

This paper describes the multifaceted chest rehabilitation program at a referral-teaching hospital in Saskatchewan. The program was developed following recognition of the special needs of rural patients undergoing treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It has evolved to include three aspects. ⋯ The second aspect is that of the one-day educational workshop aimed at outpatients not yet requiring hospitalization. The third aspect pertains to the educational seminars organized to help the rural health professional in fulfilling a role in his or her community, whether assisting patients with COPD at home or in hospital. In the future, in order to assess the efficacy of this multifaceted program, a formal research study devised according to the data obtained through a preliminary survey of 101 of the program's inpatients should be undertaken.
